I distinctly remember waking up one morning and finding this on POE-TV. It really got under my skin for a while. It was Budd Dwyer all over again.

In case it isn't obvious, the most compelling thing about this all-too-compelling document is the real time aspect. The whole world changes in 13 minutes. It wasn't the moans of the dying that captured my imagination, it was some guy desperately searching for his girlfriend, calling her name over and over.

Or at least, that's how I remember it. I'm going to take my time deciding whether to return this time. But I voted for it. It belongs here, if anything does.

I distinctly remember waking up one morning and finding this on POE-TV.8

*cORRECTION, poe_news.

fedex - 2015-04-29

THATS why I cant find it, now I understand. I musta seen it on POE news dogs years' ago too.

Scrimmjob - 2015-04-29

This was here once already, I had to search for 20 minutes to find it, and it kept returning a valid id thing, that one had bad tags and a nondescript title, so I'm sure it didn't come up on the dupe check.

This is some fascinating and fucked up footage that makes me wonder about all the shitty bar concerts I've ever been to. What a shame it would be to lose your life trying to watch Great White, yuck!

badideasinaction - 2015-04-30

Of all the videos on poetv, this one is one of the hardest to watch. Maybe it's the deaths are so immediate in nature and fathomable in quantity.

lotsmoreorcs - 2015-04-30

we need to be getting people out of their comfort zones and keeping the E on PoE lest this place devolve into an earnest, painfully politically correct subreddit

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-04-29

I actually did research on "human stampedes" for a disaster healthcare class in my Masters, and they're a myth. At least, there is only one legitimate case of true stampeding. Most people, even with limited exits and in dark/smoky settings are quite well behaved and won't just trample over people. People instinctively seek out loved-ones too during mass panic episodes. It made me feel better about people in general, knowing that.
But, the myth of people turning into a bunch of crazed beasts when faced with danger endures, sadly.

lotsmoreorcs - 2015-04-29

i dunno what you call this per se, besides absolutely mortifying, that one shot of the clogged doorway stuck with me from the moment i saw it on fox news the day after, this is one of those things i have to watch 1000 times to finally come to terms with

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-04-29

Oh yeah, it's pretty terrible, don't get me wrong. There's something about fires that make people freak out more than about anything.

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-04-29

I think that fire, alcohol/drugs, limited exits and darkness make these things a lot more common it seems. Since I wrote that paper back in about 2005, there have been a few other incidents. They're really rare but terrible.

lotsmoreorcs - 2015-04-29

Any specific ones you can recall besides Brazil

godot - 2015-04-29

Scrimmjob - 2015-04-29

The first time this video came around I read up on a lot of these other night club fires. The story of the Cocoanut Grove fire is a good read.

jangbones - 2015-04-29

this really is one of the most awful visual documents imaginable

a hundred dead, over two hundred injured

chumbucket - 2015-04-29

There there is this sad story:

lotsmoreorcs - 2015-04-29

headphones recommended!

misterbuns - 2015-04-29

A bouncer kept people from using the band's exit as the fire grew!

lotsmoreorcs - 2015-04-29

a true bouncer, unswayed from his duties in the face of disaster

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-04-29

A true bouncer, dumber than a box of dirt.

lotsmoreorcs - 2015-04-29

I hate you JHM

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-04-30

I know. As a matter of fact, it's the only thing I know about you.

chumbucket - 2015-04-29

Despite the hopeless speed of the fire that was a very quick response on the part of the fire department.

animegurl1000 - 2015-04-29

The fire department got the call almost immediately because there was a cop working security there, and he was on the radio as soon as the fire started.

You can see him at 1:14 saying "Don't push" and again at 6:04 reeling hose to a firefighter.

yogarfield - 2015-04-29

That's what you get for going to see a band with a light-show.

spikestoyiu - 2015-04-29

What

Old_Zircon - 2015-04-29

I've met enough people who were at this that I don't have any intention to ever watch it.

The most notable were the mother/daughter Great White superfan duo who followed them like the Dead. They were lucky enough to get out OK at least, and would come into the shop where I worked to look for rare Great White albums (apparently that's something that exists) from time to time.

Also, this was used as a pretext to shut down just about every really good venue in Boston and killed the music scene that was pretty much the center of my social life up there. Neither Boston nor Providence ever really recovered as far as I'm concerned. There are still small basement and loft shows but nothing on the scale of what was going on until the winter after this happened.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2015-04-29

Why is this here again and why did you fuckers vote it through?

fuck you lostmoreorcs

lotsmoreorcs - 2015-04-29

Portal of EVIL pussy

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-04-29

So who IS lotsmoreorcs now?

lotsmoreorcs - 2015-04-29

This is Craig, still in Nola with the Squas trying to pick up the one pieces, posted under the wharf drinking on 211s and banging foils

misterbuns - 2015-04-30

Yeah right you're a start up goon posting from a condo in the mission nice try.

lotsmoreorcs - 2015-04-30

Not even close Ruth

Jimmy Labatt - 2015-04-30

This is one of the most horrible things I've ever seen. I had to shut it down not too far past the front doorway part. If anything was more deserving of the "what Hell sounds like" tag I don't know what is.

That said, this needs to be on here.

Nominal - 2015-04-30

Less government regulation and building code bureaucracy means more freedom!

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-01

Shit, that IS really clear audio!

lotsmoreorcs - 2015-05-04

Honest question JHM are you kind of able to roll out of the tank the DSS workers keep you floating around in on your own or have they devised some sort of pulley system
