These privileged little white boy MRA anti-feminism shits have invaded Canada too? God help us all.

Potrod - 2015-05-12

The word MRA gets thrown around a lot these days. Not every dumb, immature drunk who parrots an offensive meme is an MRA.

Potrod - 2015-05-12

Also it's funny to be express surprise at douchey frat bros existing in civilized Canada. I thought America was the only country with douchey people!

That guy - 2015-05-12

Also, her high horse is funny.

Nominal - 2015-05-13

Poetv's MRA hysteria highlight was the clip where the old lady gets a ball to the face during a Knicks game and every person around her reflexively shielded their own face before thinking to reach out and try to protect her, but one of them was a white guy so of course the MRA fingers started pointing.

Xenocide - 2015-05-13

If you go on national television and act like an MRA, you don't get to whine about being mistaken for one.

Change - 2015-05-13

whining about being mistaken for the mra stereotype is probably a good sign that you deserve to be mistaken for an mra stereotype

magnesium - 2015-05-13

I'd go so far as to say that actual MRA's are worse here than in the US. At least in western Canada. Many of the prominent MRA's are from Alberta, which makes their ongoing bitchfest about the draft that will never happen again all the more bizarre.

I doubt this guy is an MRA, though. Just a regular idiot.

Potrod - 2015-05-13

I'm whining about dumb fucking buzzwords being thrown around. I've never met a single MRA in real life (and I kind of doubt anyone has) so I have no idea what their geographic base is, if they have one at all.

infinite zest - 2015-05-13

Dude got fired? From his job? On his day off? Talking to someone completely unaffiliated with his place of employment? Making no reference whatsoever to where or what that place of employment is? Sorry this guy's a douche but I'm taking his side.

SolRo - 2015-05-13

Nah, fuck him.

You want to get on TV by looking like a moronic douche? Your employer might not want that kind of celebrity representing the company.

Xenocide - 2015-05-13

I bet his mom died laughing.

infinite zest - 2015-05-13

"Assistant network management engineer" isn't exactly the face of a company though. Assuming that everyone who does/says something stupid, sexist or otherwise on camera has a job of some sort, there'd be a lot less people trolling craigslist's jobs section everyday.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-05-13

Which one of them was the one that got fired? The first dude? Or the main dude was talking, who was just waiting to say it and didn't.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-05-13

Employers can pretty much fire you if they want to, as long as they're not firing you on the basis of your gender, age, ethnic background or religious affiliation.

Firing does seem a little harsh, but maybe the guy's an asshole and had done shit like this before? Screaming, "Fuck her right in the pussy!" on a live newscast seems like the sort of thing an asshole would do. Maybe he's an asshole at work, too.

Change - 2015-05-13

you're siding with an asshole who could be identified and associated to the company getting fired for doing something deserving of getting fired

your priorities are fucked and wrong

EvilHomer - 2015-05-13

Well, yes, as Binro says, there could be extenuating circumstances. He could be an asshole at work. Or, it could be that we need to expand anti-discrimination laws, so as to forbid companies from firing people who have made a controversial political or social statement.

Businesses used to fire Catholics, queers and blacks because they didn't want "that sort" of person representing their company, either. Just because it was legal back then, that didn't make it *right*, and if we are to accept the premise that punitive laws are necessary for both preventing and punishing this sort of discriminatory behavior, then clearly we need to rethink our policies towards sociopolitical "thought" discrimination too. This is particularly important now, what with social media being so ubiquitous, and the average American's private intellectual life being on display in a manner that we've never before seen.

IZ is right.

infinite zest - 2015-05-13

To me it's not a question of what he said or what he agrees/disagrees with the news reporter about. It's back to the fact that it has nothing to do with the workplace. Like, have you ever run into your boss at the bar and you're already drunk and maybe have a thing or two to say about how the company's run? Or maybe how you think Janice in accounting's pretty hot? Or maybe you just avoid him completely and accidentally walk into a window that you thought was a door. At the most, boss should be able to give you shit about it on monday.

badideasinaction - 2015-05-13

Hydro One said they "were taking steps" to fire him. Hard to say how that would turn out if they challenge it in court, depends on:

- how good his lawyers are
- if there was any indications of this in his work
- which union he's part of (Eng Society or Power Worker's Union). The division there is totally arbitrary (when I was there developers were Society, tech support was PWU, and student interns were PWU until they became grad student co-op whereupon they became Society). PWU is stronger than Society, so if he's in that wing, they fight for him because it's their job to fight for anyone being fired.

I'm not against him being fired, mind you, I'm just not sure on the legal outcome for that.

infinite zest - 2015-05-13

I got fired from one job ever, and it was in part because of being interviewed by local news. Basically, there was a big campus/police riot in Madison which caused a flaming rock to go through my work's window at some point in the early morning, among other things, so going back to work meant, well, we were open, but we were also busy picking up little pieces of glass and broken displays. Anyway, they interviewed me and I said that I thought the students were just as dumb as the cops and that Madison hasn't had anything worth rioting about since the 60s and in doing so I sort of told our target demographic that they were a bunch of drunk fucking idiots. And, I was the face that people saw every day. Frankly, I was glad when I got canned the next day, but I'm sure that had a lot to do with the fact that I insinuated the use of tear gas and excessive force to get riotey dudebros off the streets. And that's a direct "I WORK AT X AND I THINK MY CUSTOMERS ARE DIPSHITS" in front of however many thousands of people watch the local news. Millions of people have have seen this, but I'm willing to bet that 75% of the company didn't even know that this guy was their co-worker.

infinite zest - 2015-05-13

Or, let's flip the script entirely: not too long ago, I was hanging out with a local news reporter for a news station here in Portland at a bar. Afterwords he invites me over for drinks so we hang out and eventually tries to kiss me, which I gracefully declined and that was that. If I HAD been offended or thought the pass was forcible or something, his place as a prominent face in the news should not be taken into consideration. It's like, yeah, this FHRITP guy is a douche, and the comment IS sexist, but then logically every FHRITP guy or girl should lose their jobs too.

infinite zest - 2015-05-13

"hey, Mike, remember that thing you said on the news last September? Well, you've been doing a great job here and all, but I've gotta let you go. No, don't bother to go upstairs, the movers already have your things in boxes and they're waiting outside."

SolRo - 2015-05-13

Could they get him for lying on his application/resume?

I'm pretty sure he didn't sell himself a douche-y toolbag when he was interviewed.

Change - 2015-05-13

no fuck you you are dumb and wrong

duder had a contract that basically said 'don't be a cunt in public', and was getting paid enough to expect him not to be a cunt in public

he was a cunt in public, and publicly enough that his employers noticed in less than a day

he was fired for breech of contract

breech of contract for being a cunt in public

Change - 2015-05-13

or fucking breach, whatever

infinite zest - 2015-05-14

Change is that true? The only jobs I know if that have a stipulation like that are public office jobs, and even certain mayors of Toronto have violated that. Like, almost every job has a no drugs/alcohol/harassment on the job policy, but no job says that you can't go out pussy hunting at bars off the clock. Now, let's say I worked at a Best Buy, and was involved in a bar fight that made local news. Since I wasn't at work, and the news mentions my name and displays my picture but not where I work, it's got nothing to do with my performance at work. If I was wearing my Best Buy uniform when it happened, that would be a different story. I dunno, just curious, really. Is it different in Canada? Does where you work automatically define what you can and can't do or say even when you're not on the clock?

SolRo - 2015-05-14

IZ, the scenarios you mention have at least a veneer of ambiguity, anonymity or defensibility.

This on the other hand is 100% the guy, unprovoked (though snake begs to differ), being a raging douchebag to get attention and on TV.

There aren't any, and shouldn't be any, protections for gigantic douchenozzles making the world a worse place.

And freedom of speech and expression is only something government agencies have to abide by, private employers do not.

Rodents of Unusual Size: the Hydro One employee was the guy with the yellow jersey who said he's lucky he didn't have a vibrator.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-05-14

Another thing to consider is this guy might have to work around and deal with women all day. If they've seen this video of him screaming that he doesn't care if the woman in the video felt disrespected because, "it's fucking hilarious!" then they might not feel so comfortable working around him anymore.

It's like if some white guy had to work around non-whites and was then went on live TV shouting about how non-whites don't deserve respect if showing them respect will interfere with the punch line of a joke.

Change - 2015-05-14

yes its goddamned true

he worked for a publicly owned hydro company, with a contract containing code of conduct stipulations

you are being stupid

infinite zest - 2015-05-14

That's interesting. I've literally never heard of something like that in the States, and I switch jobs a lot. So, he could get busted for being seen at a strip club too?

infinite zest - 2015-05-14

Oh well, I don't really care.. fuck everyone in this video right in the pussy

Binro the Heretic - 2015-05-13

"But...but...you're not supposed to call me out for acting like a douchebag!"

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-05-13

I dont mind the assholery at all. After all he is just saying something rude but also nonsensical and to be offended by it you would need to have a reasonably sized stick up your ass. What I detest about this phenomenon, is people being so fucking boring and unoriginal, just spouting this line for no other reason than they saw someone else do it on a youtube video.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-13

Here's my question: do the MALE reporters have guys saying "Fuck her right in the pussy!" day after day? If its always or usually directed at women, that's what I consider the essence of rape culture, using sex to degrade and humiliate women, and she has every reason to take it personally.

EvilHomer - 2015-05-13

Yes, John, male reporters do get bombarded with FHRITP. It's not a statement directed AT anyone in particular, certainly not the newscaster! It's simply the audio-visual equivalent of a photo-bomb, a grassroots method of culture jamming and disrupting the media through direction-action iconoclasty.

If you're almost 60, and even you know what FHRITP means, then you should know the rest of this stuff already. Please stop trying to look for an angle with which to validate your reflexive need to rescue damsels.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-05-13

I do mind assholery for assholery's sake. He's not making a political or artistic statement or anything noble, he's just being a shithead and making the world suck just a little bit more.

This is on the same level as pissing on the seat of a public toilet.

CrimsonHyperSloth - 2015-05-13

I'm with Binro.

Freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom from consequences. When people call you out for the asshole you are you don't get to be offended and try and take some flimsy moral high-ground.

Potrod - 2015-05-13

It's pretty much equivalent to running out on the field at a baseball game, only probably a bit less mature and inconveniencing fewer people.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-13

After I posted that, I watched all the FHRITP clips I could find, and my impression is that female reporters are not exclusively the victim but they're a solid majority. I'm using the phone right now, I'll get real numbers when I'm back at the computer.

Lurchi - 2015-05-13

did you happen to catch the gender of the hecklers?

Potrod - 2015-05-13

There were a handful of women hecklers in the "Best of" video. The vast majority of idiots that run onto the field are also male (e.g. 90%+ of the posts here: http://deadspin.com/tag/idiot-on-the-field)--maybe drunk guys are just more prone to being impulsive idiots? Maybe a study is in order.

FHRITP is the dumbest, most witless "prank" ever conceived and perpetuated, but that's all it is. Mr. Purple Cat hit the nail on the head.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-13

Homer, fuck you right in the pussy. Speaking up is speaking up. Its not rescuing, and its not being a victim, either.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-13

>>did you happen to catch the gender of the hecklers?

I saw one female heckler. I also saw one female reporter who seemed to think it was hilarious.

There are intentions, and there are perceptions. If you say you didn't mean to humiliate the reporter, I believe you, but the reporter said she felt humiliated, and that's what matters.

As unpleasant as Brianna Wu can be, this is what she was talking about.

FHRITP guy: FUCK HER RIGHT IN THE PUSSY!

Reporter: That's humilating.

FHRITP guy: No, it's not!

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-13

What horrifies me is that I know what FHRITP means.

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-05-13

StanleyPain - 2015-05-13

I don't have many heroes in this world, but this woman is one of them now.

theSnake - 2015-05-13

Men and women are different. Men need to blow off steam with friends, and this is what happens when women thrust themselves into those spaces. Glad you got someone fired for saying a bad word and hurting your feelings lady?

SolRo - 2015-05-13

Do you realize how stupid you are, or does being that much a fucking idiot make you oblivious to it?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-13

Now, SolRo, there's no need to be so hostile. The snake is right, but I can see why you're confused. Let me break it down for you.

The guy got fired for being a dick on TV. You might think that's his own fault, because he chose to be a dick on TV, but that's a common misconception. It's actually the reporter's fault for thrusting herself into a space where there's men, making the guy's dickishness inevitable. Actually, I think it's pretty straightforward.

Change - 2015-05-14

both you and thesnake are fucking dumb mongs

Binro the Heretic - 2015-05-14

JHM is being sarcastic, Change.

I know, it doesn't always come through when read as opposed to heard.

Sanest Man Alive - 2015-05-14
