I don't think they thought through the demographic groups that would say: "Oh boy, Uncle Buck! I went to see that when it came out in theaters; it was great! I hope this second shot at a TV series goes better than the first one!"
Cause there zero of those people.
AND WHY THE HELL IS THAT BROTHER NOT FLIPPING A BIG ASS PANCAKE WITH A GOD DAMN SNOW SHOVEL THAT IS THE ONLY GOD DAMN THING ANYONE REMEMBERS ABOUT THIS GOD DAMN FRANCHISE.

Just a reminder, "buck" remains a slur meaning "black man".

This is something Marvel Comics discovered the hard way in the mid 80s, when they were swapping out their Captain America, and decided to make a black man Captain America's new "Bucky". Positive idea, but poorly executed (name aside, there was also the small matter of putting a grown black man in the role previously filled by a young white boy). To Marvel's credit, they came clean in-comic about what a bad move it was, and gave the character a new name and promoted him to Cap's full partner.

I'm not going to watch this but as far as shows go it doesn't look horrible and actually made me smile. I like Mike Epps.

Oh, ambiguously gay black Uncle Buck.

Ugh. I usually have the TV on at work for Jeopardy on ABC and then I get distracted and forget to turn it off, and last week it was an atrocity exhibition of shit. It was Fresh Off The Boat, followed by - I shit you not - the same show but about Jews called The Goldbergs. Then, a show called Blackish about an upper middle class black family. If either show is racist, it comes off in the same way it would in a Ben Stiller/Eddie Murphy movie or something, and is innocent and ABC-ish enough, but there's a certain kind of evil working at Disney that has this all planned out, which makes it even more racist. It's like going to one of those buffets that advertises Chinese and American cuisine. Sure, you can have both, but upon arrival the waitstaff and cooks pretty much know which dishes to make more of.

John Hughes movies have started bothering me. Maybe it's the emphasis on every character living in 2% bajillonare suburbia, or the spoiled entitled yuppies in his brat pack movies, or the casual racism, or the casual rape allusions. Maybe I've just gotten older and the 80's and 90's were a long time ago.

I'm feeling the same vibe from "Uncle Buck." In his review, Ebert pointed out that the Uncle Buck character has an undercurrent of gross unpleasantness, and he's not wrong. It's hard to sympathize with most of the characters in that movie. The kids and adults evoke mean-spirited shittiness that's pretty uncomfortable.

This does not improve on "Uncle Buck" or Hughes. It was not needed and does not make me feel any better.

it looks better than the typical sitcom schlock and is a black ensemble comedy that does not look like lazy Tyler Perry garbage. Also, it is strangely miscalculated to probably offend anyone actually familiar with Uncle Buck. So-- good job, I guess.
