Ahem. It's not new wave, it's new RETRO wave. Jeeze!

infinite zest - 2015-06-05 I didn't realize until just now that Timecop, Lazerhawk, Com Truise etc. are on GTAV which is totally awesome and almost enough incentive for me to buy the goddamn game.

infinite zest - 2015-06-05 Thanks! It pops up once in a while on pandora when I'm at work (ironically I can barely get poeTV at work) but I can't remember which station. Pandora really sucks when it comes to lesser known artists. For example Tycho radio quickly goes into new age yoga shit, as does Boards of Canada. And Bon Iver (yes, I like hearing a man what sounds like he's singing about being trapped in a tin shed while in a real tin shed) quickly goes to Mumford & Son of a Bitch. I needs the albums.

infinite zest - 2015-06-05 My old Kentucky Blog was really good in the late oughts like Pitchfork was in the earlies, but now I find myself trapped in a local music bubble, which isn't the worst thing in the world, but I like to branch out. That AV Club story about how statistically 33 is the age when people stop listening to/caring about new music really got to me, because it was absolutely true, with me anyway. So haha AV Club..

infinite zest - 2015-06-05 Whoops replied to the wrong retro wave related "you might like" post.. There's a reason why this is the only website I visit :)

infinite zest - 2015-06-06 I'm not sure what I'd categorize BMSR as (it's weird hearing Tobacco in car commercials and in the Silicon Valley intro now) but I really like it.

needs the "Timecop" tag to link up with all the other Timecop stuff on here
|
fedex - 2015-06-05 erk, sorry I was thinking of FutureCop, NVMND
|
infinite zest - 2015-06-05 'Twas I who also thought thee Futurecop in GTA. Regardless I'm really digging this.
|
infinite zest - 2015-06-05 Nein Nein Nein! Est die Timecop1983! Also perturbator's on the soundtrack. I'll be bored as shit with the game in 10 minutes but at least the soundtrack was great, better than dumb sea chanties in black flag anyway.

Love this stuff. Perfect.

yogarfield - 2015-06-05
last summer sucked, and this album was one of the few high points for me.

Old_Zircon - 2015-06-05
New Retro Wave and Synthwave/Outrun and similar are fun but it does stray too far into revivalism for my taste. Sometimes it's great and I'm impressed by the verisimilitude of the best stuff but overall it feels like asking for Shockabilliy and getting The Stray Cats.
|
Old_Zircon - 2015-06-05 I'm definitely down with the interest in late 80s/90s commercial music, but I'm more interested in the music that is incorporating elements of that stuff into something new.
This is pretty good, though.

Hey, you guys discovered this too. Neat.
Next you gotta put Kavinsky - Outrun up here. People who think lazerhawk or perturbator is good will have to reconsider.
|
infinite zest - 2015-06-05 I think Kavinsky's sort of responsible for the whole thing, given the popularity of Drive. I didn't like the movie, but damn if the soundtrack wasn't almost enough for me to like it. Just like Hotline Miami. When I was watching Fury Road I was thinking that it would only be more perfect with a good soundtrack (if I recall it was pretty bland, save for the scenes with Mr. Flaming Double Guitar)..

I also have front page privs. Hi-5 (stars) !!!

Now, I'm giving this 5 stars because Timecop1983, despite having a incredibly super-clichéd neo-retro-quasi-desi-demi-hevi-wave name, is a pretty solid contributor to the field.
Just from scouring Bandcamp, you can tell the synthwave wannabes with a cheap snythesizer from the people who can pull it off for more than a song or two, who can easily get into the new-retro-synth groove but find it hard to maintain.
Among the ones I'd recommend is the composer who goes by the handle Gost - initially starting off as a producer of "imaginary 80s synth horror film soundtrack" pieces he embraced other influences like club music and metal. Gost released a few EPs through 2013-2014 but after some silence came back for a new full-length album "Behemoth" with choice cuts like "Master"

I'm totally for the 80s music revival.
|
Jet Bin Fever - 2015-06-08 Not so much 80s music as 80s film music. This wouldn't have been on the radio in the 80s, but it could've been part of a soundtrack.
