I don't follow boxing, so I have to ask: Is this real?

Short answer: yes.

Medium answer: Most any boxer with a modicum of talent gets fed 'tomato cans' (boxers without a modicum of talent) for their first few fights to help them develop. Mr. Taishan is a low-talent freak with huge length and reasonable power, which at the lower levels can be enough to win fights, and everyone loves freakshows. 4 round fights are the entry level into the pro world, btw.
