Genderkin

gravelstudios - 2015-06-26

I'm all for people being whoever they are without shame.

Old_Zircon - 2015-06-26

Too bad this person doesn't seem to feel that way.

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-06-26

Trannie Hall.

Chocolate Jesus - 2015-06-26

:)

Old_Zircon - 2015-06-26

Any of PoE's resident trans people want to weigh in on whether or not stuff like this is as offensive as it appears to me as a hetero guy? Because to me this seems just about as bad as people with self-diagnosed multiple personalities and stuff, and is utterly disrespectful to people who are actually transgender and what they are faced with in a society that still doesn't really recognize them.

I would almost go so far as to say this is like trans-blackface.

Spaceman Africa - 2015-06-26

I'm not seeing anything real offensive or 'evil' about this. I mean if this person is just wanting to live on their on terms and slough off a gender binary, that's totally fine and more power to them.

That guy - 2015-06-26

Which one's more illusory, the gender binary, or the idea that gender and orientation generally forms into two big groups (with a percentage of outsiders) for MERELY oppressive, socio-historic reasons?

If I run around as an atheist insisting that religion exists for MERELY oppressive, socio-historic reasons, discounting the brain science reasons for it, and the other social and psychological reasons for it, am I not going to sound like a fucking fuckwit?

simon666 - 2015-06-26

I think it's safe to say some people defend themselves by constructing large critical discourses, or adopting them. In such cases, it's less about some ontological point and more about the instrumental use of concepts effect the state of affairs in the world.

I'm not getting less abstract than this. Apologies in advance.

That guy - 2015-06-26

did you mean "more about HOW the instumental use of concepts AFFECT the state of affairs in the world"?

Anyway, if you're saying it's often pushy rhetoric or sophistry, I'll agree. I assume it's not sophistry for the above video person/persona.

That guy - 2015-06-26

In other words, he's not using rhetoric that he knows to be false.

simon666 - 2015-06-26

I think 'effect' is right when used with an object, in this case the object being 'the state of affairs in the world.' But anyway, are you in a mood today that you need to get pedantic about grammar?

Anyhow. I don't think most people, this person in the video included, are even thinking in ontological terms or rhetorical terms. I think most people are introduced to some language game (I'm not referencing Wittgenstein, though I know this to be a term of his) and make use of the language because it is instrumental in their getting on in the world.

That guy - 2015-06-26

hah, no. I retract my snotty usage comment. Affect vs effect as verbs is a little tough.

...as is the phrase 'language game' which means one thing in that classic philosophical example, but the two words together in English seem ready-made to mean either 'rhetorical manipulation' and/or 'a game played with definitions and a priori reasoning that may not have any validity etc'

"Spaceman Africa

Attention seeking behavior in any form tends to rub me the wrong way.

Perhaps it's my Scandinavian heritage.

EvilHomer - 2015-06-27

Yeah, I had a transwoman friend who was very big on attention seeking behavior. It was irritating, to say the least. I had nothing against him being a her, of course - it's no crazier than our friend Boomer being a dog, when you think about it - but Cossette really insisted upon herself, and trans or no trans, that sort of thing can wear on your patience.

In Cossie's case, I let it slide, because we were both homeless at the time, and I know she was going through a lot of shit, both financially and socially (there are few things worse than being a flamboyant white transwoman in the middle of an overwhelmingly Christian Puerto Rican barrio). When you actually talked to her you'd find she was pretty friendly once she chilled out; being an obnoxious douchebag was simply her way of coping.

Not sure what this video person's excuse is.

fluffy - 2015-06-27

EH: "[an MTF transsexual] is no crazier than our friend Boomer being a dog, when you think about it"

...

Yeah, uh.

That guy - 2015-06-26

I'm not watching this but please tell me the Desc: is a direct quote from it?

Hooker - 2015-06-26

You bet it is!

namtar - 2015-06-26

Gurl, more power to you, but that's NOT a cute look.

You look like you done stepped out a Portland women's bookstore.

Gmork - 2015-06-26

If it's a genuine pursuit and not a plea for attention, more power to this person.

I'm getting some less-than-completely-authentic vibes though. If that's what you genuinely feel you need to do to fully express yourself, I have no qualms. I just hope it's not coming from a place of mostly seeking attention.

Gmork - 2015-06-26

And by "It" I mean the whole getup and presentation, not the idea what this person is not gender-binary. Anywhere else I post, I wouldn't feel the need to even have a post script, but there are people here who make a sport of consistently and incorrectly assuming what my beliefs are, so I have to get a bit more specific here sometimes.

That guy - 2015-06-26

haha

"I'm getting some less-than-completely-authentic vibes though."

Welcome to everyone.

memedumpster - 2015-06-26

You know, you can fix that chameleon circuit if you just hotwire the fragment links through the binary binary binary binary... I'M OKAY!

I have no problem with this. It's just life. Some life forms are colorful and h...sh...i... said "y'all." Y'all-normative prevails.

Other possible comment : This Genesis P'Orridge is too hot... this Genesis P'Orridge is too cold... this Genesis P'Orridge is juuuust right!
