It takes a human baby something like 5 years to catch up with a chimp baby mentally, human babies are dumb and helpless.
Cost of having a big brain. Our infants are born far less developed than most any other mammal with the obvious exception of marsupials. Human social structure evolved to ensure the protection and development of our young.
