Has a real Saturn 3 vibe to it.

Remember when people thought a move towards post-scarcity would improve the lives of everyone? How fucking naive that was, huh?
SolRo
Someone should do a remake of The Jetsons, where there were no button pressing jobs after computers and robots took over all the jobs, he's barely getting buy going from one part time and contractor job to the other, while his wife divorced him, his son died from treatable health problems, and his daughter is a high priced hooker to the upper class, because that's the only option she has left to get out of that 3000th story slum.

The "permanent temp" market right now really is fucking horrid. It's straight out of all the nightmare pre-1930s labor practices you read about in history class while thinking, "Thank god we're past that!"

Mandatory arbitration agreement contracts (don't agree to waive your right to civil trial or class action suit? You don't get to work!) seem way more evil to me than Yellow Dog Contracts. Even more depressing is the emerging crowd sourcing model (Uber, etc.) makes it unnecessary to even bother with such anti-suit/union practices because workers are never in contact with each other.

SolRo
The corporate whore indoctrination of Americans is complete.

should see the comment sections of any uber story on the internet...a veritable swarm of drones is in every single one sucking off their 'disruptive' corporate messiahs while jacking off free market economics and Reagans corpse with each hand.

namtar
If only we could have the strong economies of soviet-era communist countries.

SolRo
China is doing horribly I hear

namtar
Even growth in China is slowing. China benefits from low wages, low environmental standards, and unsustainable fixed asset investments.

China has been gradually embracing capitalism and free markets. The Chinese system is a hybrid command/market economy that benefits from foreign investments and exporting, which has little resemblance to the closed economies of traditional communist societies.

I hope namtar is being sarcastic.

I have a friend who works in one of the rare union shops that Verizon has (their wired services are unionized). He says the union departments aren't even allowed to communicate with the nonunion departments (i.e. anything wireless) for fear that they might catch on to how badly they're being screwed.

Old_Zircon
A big part of the problem is that everyone still worships the 20th century economic myth of perpetual growth being possible (much less desirable). Between that and the secularized form of Calvinistic predestination that dominates every aspect of American culture (which in turn dominates Western economics and has a huge influence in the East as well since the 20th century socialist experiment imploded) it's easy to see how we got where we are.

Old_Zircon
Western (and particularly US) culture still equates labor with salvation, so we view people who can't or don't work as less than human. Which is a problem because it has been about a century since the amount of work available that actually contributes to the good of society has been far outpaced by the increase in population, but we are still trapped in a 17th century paradigm where everyone has to work or they are less than human, so we can't accept the idea of a social structure where labor for the sake of laboring with no real benefit t the individual or community isn't taken for granted as not just good but a necessary prerequisite to being human, even though that is the type of society we need if any of the social progress of the past couple centuries is going to endure.

What a surprise, economically illiterate anti-technology Luddites on POEtv.

Please keep in mind, aspiring gimmick posters, your act has probably been done before, and better.

Nominal
and el oh fucking el at the idea of the posters here being anti-technology

TeenerTot
He's right. I hate technology so much that I'm sending this message via morse code tapped through jungle vines.

memedumpster
Someone hacked my jungle vines, probably data loggers.

GravidWithHate
"Universal Robots". Seriously? Did they mean to reference a play in which robots exterminate humanity or was it by accident?
namtar
Pick one:

Your job is done by a robot.

Your job is done by a someone in another country making almost nothing.

Won't someone think of the blacksmiths or the candlestick makers or the fabric weavers or etc., etc.....
oddeye
What if your job is something that a robot can't do and is something that can't be outsourced cheaper?

namtar
robots will be able to do anything...but love...

SolRo
what job is that oddeye?

unicorn groomer?

oddeye
Artisan desingers and shit. Anything that involves creativity.

SolRo
So you're basically saying we need to transition to a hipster and interior decorator based economy

SolRo
P.S.

Your company would still bring in an Indian hipster to do your creative bullshit for half your salary. You'd also have to train him to do your job before getting any severance pay.

memedumpster
Unless it's a 100% video game and bleep bloop music based economy, I don't see an art based economy happening in America. All other forms of art require manufacturing, meaning robot time! Not to mention the question of where all the devices are built to act as "tools" for these arts (not America).

I can also easily imagine the job being done in another country by a robot. America doesn't have the cheapest electricity in the world per kilowatt hour. If you have your automated art/bloopsong factory in, say, South Africa, you can save a ton over a few years.

SolRo
You don't need to make video games in America, you just farm out most of the jobs to cheap overseas development houses, then hire 1 or 2 locals to do the patches if any bugs are found after it goes on sale.

oddeye
I'm not saying everyone become comic book artists or some shit so pinch the tips of your cocks and keep your rancid jizz in your sweaty balls, yo.

Just saying, you can't out source a job that no one else can do.

SolRo
You're so fucking stupid right now that I'm not even sure where to begin.

Hmm... How about you tell us what this magical snowflake job that no one else on the planet could possibly do

Meerkat
I am late to the party but I have experience with this shit.

Let's assume that YES, you are a special snowflake that is really good at your job and if they replace you, the end product will not be as good.

The problem is your manager and maybe his/her manager knows you are a special snowflake, but the accountant reporting to the CFO only knows that your number in the spreadsheet is higher than some other number in the spreadsheet so PACK UP YOUR FUCKING DESK.
