There's a Quest for Glory fangame in which you can screw the centaur since she's no longer underage. It's so terrible yet so large and clearly the result of so much effort that it has attracted much controversy within the fandom; at least one fan forum has banned mentioning it. Read all about it: http://www.pcgamer.com/saturday-crapshoot-quest-for-glory-4-12/

Shoebox Joe - 2015-07-22

I honestly can't tell if that fan game is one massive fuck you to the players or just a really elaborate allusion to rom hacks.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-07-22

Have computers gotten expensive enough that only people smart enough to appreciate this game can afford to buy one?

BiggerJ - 2015-07-22

This game has a tangled history. First, Telltale Games got the license to make a new KQ game and planned to reboot the series. But they had too many projects going on at once and had to cancel it. Then, Replay Games (the company run by Sierra alumnus Paul Trowe that re-remade Leisure Suit Larry 1) asked Activision for the license and were told to choke on a sweaty dick and that Activision planned to make one themselves (this latter part was probably doubted; the safe assumption to make was that Activision was just going to recommence sitting on the license forever). Replay Games would later collapse in on itself.

Then Activision did something unexpected and created an indie label - a new Sierra - and handed the KQ license to The Odd Gentlemen, a company with its own interesting history. Their first and still most famous project is a puzzle-platformer. Their next puzzle game, with a story written by Neil Gaiman, received wretched reviews. They were working on the Homestuck game until Hussie dumped them and turned his company, What Pumpkin, into a game studio.

And that's to say nothing of the KQ fangame that got C&D'd by Sierra, un-C&D'd, C&D'd again after Activision bought Sierra, then un-C&D'd again when Activision decided that maybe it wasn't a good thing that people were basically calling them Hitlervision.

I only remember playing one King's Quest, can't even remember which one. But I do remember it being kind of dark, sort of like Zork but not as weird; definitely not this Neo-Disney Frozen Looking bullshit.

5 and thousands more spirit stars for every time I died in that fucking game. I hate you King's Quest!

infinite zest - 2015-07-22

Actually watching that King's Quest death Speedrun video, they do sort of have that humor, especially as they move along. The one I played was definitely 2. But it's still sort of a Princess Bride sort of vibe and not a Disney one.. oh well fuck u King's Quest either way!

badideasinaction - 2015-07-23

From one account Hussie didn't so much decide to go it alone as realize TOG wasn't actually working on his game.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1075244

The archived tumblr post linked in that is from an associate of Hussie's. I have no real love for the guy, but if the game got screwed over by TOG to work on KQ that really sucks. On the other hand, I could also see him pulling the "have friends do the dirty work to smear someone else for him" given his past, so I dunno.

Where's Cedric?

Man, Christopher Lloyd will do just about anything these days.

BiggerJ - 2015-07-22

Someone asked him if he'd come back to do Toonstruck 2 and he basically replied, "Wasn't that that game that didn't sell?" He also refused to let his likeness be used in the digital version of the Addams Family pinball table in Pinball Arcade. Contrast with the voice cast of Shenmue here - http://www.seganerds.com/2015/07/04/check-out-the-sega-nerdcast-wi th-shenmues-english-voice-actors/ - the voice of Ryo has been confirmed to return.

Wow. I know way too much about the things we're talking about here.

Shoebox Joe - 2015-07-22

How nerdy is Tom Kenny? 'Cause he's got a part in it.

infinite zest - 2015-07-23

Holy shit. All these years and I never knew that he was Fester! Yeah that's totally not him in Pinball Arcade. I just played the demo for a sec, my video mode is on the DMD, but it's a fun distraction and Farside does a really good job.

I get updates from them regularly and it depresses me that they're pretty much running out of historically good pins to use and are pretty much at the Stern era.. oh well, all things must return to the fold. Cool app tho!

infinite zest - 2015-07-23

Also that actually makes me want to play the new Shen Mue that much more. I've only played the first one because I had to review it, in Japanese no less, and hell if I know how to speak it, I basically Wittgenstein II'd my way through the game but sort of ironically loved the voice acting in the American version when I saw videos of it later. Now they could get anybody. Like, Lost Boys guy replaced David Hayter as Solid Snake, Twilight Sparkle was just in there for a second but probably got the MLP crowd to buy the fucking demo of a game.. Yu Suzuki's keeping it real.

StanleyPain - 2015-07-22

This is one of those new bullshit games (like the Telltale games) where the whole game is basically done, but splitting it into chunks and releasing it as "episodes" is the marketing plot.

garcet71283 - 2015-07-22

Yup, because for each chapter is a helluva lot more than

FABIO - 2015-07-23

There are a ton of problems with Telltale games (mostly how they've completely ditched all puzzles or player choice and made the titles a 100% motion comic, which even then wouldn't be that bad if they weren't such poor writers), but the episodic structure isn't one of them.

They're also not done right away. Wolf Among Us had over a 6 month delay between some episodes. Tons of fans complaining and posting negative reviews over it. They wouldn't have pulled that if it was all done up front.

It's gotten to the point though where by the time all 5 episodes of any such game are out, it's time for a big sale. No reason to buy them until the whole game is done.

(Playing Life is Strange right now. It isn't half bad, and I was expecting to totally hate it. Trying way to hard on the teen slang angle though. I don't think even teenagers say "hella" unironically.)

Two Jar Slave - 2015-07-23

I really liked the first Walking Dead Telltale, but when I picked up Wolf Among Us I was shocked by how much the winning formula had changed. Most damning, to me, was the loss of the 'conversation countdown'. Suddenly I had all the time in the world to mull over the perfect responses. What I loved in the first Walking Dead was having to make split-second decisions, even if it was just the decision to say nothing at all. It took social RPG mechanics and turned it into something twitchy and videogamey, which felt right to me. Wolf Among Us was just so terrible.

FABIO - 2015-07-23

Oh fuck don't get me started on Wolf Among Us. They got the Fables comic so completely wrong it wasn't even the same thing, just more Walking Dead without zombies.

The choices mattered for SHIT. Every choice that would deviate the story from the scripted linear path would have something pop up going "nope!" and turn you back on the linear path. At the end, they drop any illusion whatsoever when you get the "choice" of chasing the main villain or his henchman. If you choose the main villain, your character just flat out ignores you and chases the henchman because the story demands the villain is last.

If you're going to turn a game into 100% writing, it better be damn good writing. Watching fan fiction tier quality trying to write moral ambiguity is painful.

boner - 2015-07-23

I bought the first Telltale Sam & Max game when it came out, and I liked having it in episodes, but I don't remember paying each. I dunno it might have been for all of them. So, fine. The part I didn't like is the production is just way lower quality than it was in the hand-drawn 2D days.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2015-07-23

Hunt the pixel motherfuckers.

FABIO - 2015-07-23

Fucking red tumblr noses.

I blame Penny Arcade.

chumbucket - 2015-07-23

Oh god no. Nice try Sierra. But I'm not going back to these friggin games again.
