Anyone here know of a good NES chiptune program that'll run/record off a MIDI keyboard controller?

Will GXSCC do that?

There isn't really one. I have a MIDInes but they're kind of buggy. I think you'd be happier running MaxYMiser on an Atari ST. I haven't really used it because I don't have a real monitor for my ST and 64-x200 is too blurry to read when you use the composite out, but I'm pretty sure you can play the instruments you design in it via midi; I know you can sync the tracker tempo to midi clock.

I haven't used it, but FamiTracker supports MIDI keyboards and can even export the NES sound format.

With the proper equipment you could even write your own songs to an NES cartridge if you wanted.

If you want to go super hardcore, there's a device out there called "Synthboy" I think which is an analog rack style controller that hooks into a real GameBoy and uses it's sound engine with custom software to produce sounds.

Yeah, there are a few options for controlling a Gameboy live but nothing I know about for NES other than MIDINES, and it's really underwhelming. I'm glad I traded for one but if I had spent money on it I'd have sold it. To uneliable to use as an instrument, but decent for making loops and stuff if you really want to get your sounds from real hardware. Which I can kind of respect because no matter what anyone says about "oh it's just a few raw oscillators" (which is true) the DO have a pretty distinct sound to them. The pitch bend sounds different in the analog domain, and I think the sample channel sounds a lot different than any software emulation I've heard. Nobody will actually hear the difference in a mix and it doesn't really matter, but there IS a difference.
