Mr Carson delivers a perfectly-formulated "politician answer", so props to him, I guess. But I think a better question is whether the Constitution has any authority at all anymore.

Another way to interpret his response:

He's making a distinction between religious authority and legal authority. The Constitution clearly holds legal authority and supersedes any religious text or belief. But to the faithful, a religious text of set of beliefs may supersede any legal document. Even Jesus made the distinction about rendering to Caesar what was Caesar's and to God's what was God's, and perhaps Mr Carson has a finely nuanced reading of our nation's historical divisions between church and state.
