The addition of "gate" to something to imply corruption is one of my big peeves.

Technically, there was no legal means of succession from the United States. This did not stop the southern states from doing so. You stop paying federal taxes, ignore federal laws, and start issuing your own currency.

That is to say, the threat isn't Greece being thrown out of the EU, it's that Greece bails on the EU causing the EU major financial crisis. It doesn't need the EU's laws or permission to do so.
