I wonder who voted to make the log a bitter old queen?

baleen - 2015-09-29

Also, if you google "Broom Hilda alcoholic," we're #2! Great job poetv!

Raggamuffin - 2015-09-29

It's not a matter of it not being funny. There aren't even any jokes.

twinkieafternoon - 2015-09-29

per Wikipedia, they almost turned Broom-Hilda into a Broadway musical in 2004 because Broadway is the new Las Vegas where things get brought back to die.

They should've jumped on that shit while it was hot! Schwartz was making bank on WIcked in London and New York but that musical popularity as a touring show wouldn't have taken off until at least 2007 when it started hitting smaller cities like mine, where WICKED is the WORD. Twice Every Summer Even in the Winter. Je deteste Broadway.

So according to Wikipedia she was originally (in the comic anyway) a chainsmoking alcoholic witch, who pretty early on gave up those vices to.. I guess just be a regular witch? From what I can tell those vices were pretty much like what Spinach was to Popeye in terms of character development. Did they get rid of that because less adults were reading the funnies, sort of like how Jim Davis abandoned Garfield's semi-existential dread of living life as a single man who talks to his cats for more LASAGNA jokes and Christmas with the farm animals or whatever the fuck that strip become?

At least a couple of newspaper comic strips have actually been moving in the other direction for a while, now that fewer kids (if any at all) are reading them. Garfield seems to have returned to Jon being pathetic and Hi and Lois has made the drunk a drunk again, as noted by joshreads.com.

No Sunday funnies strip was ever actually funny, though (except for Calvin and Hobbes, which I refuse to lump in with either of those). Most Sunday funnies are horrendous abortions of comedy and Garfield is the most clear cut case. When it comes to TV they did Garfield a favor and threw in some actual jokes here and there, but it was never anything great. I actually liked the random US Acres bits, mainly because of the Banana Nose song.

I am trying to wrap my head around the idea that anyone thought kids would think Broom Hilda is funny and not horrifyingly weird.

cognitivedissonance - 2015-09-29

Interestingly, the strip was created by Russ Myers.

No, not that one.

Good thing they told me when to laugh.

Sanest Man Alive - 2015-09-30

I thought this would be a clip from the Looney Tunes Show, but it was actually much better, so have extra stars.
