Hooker - 2015-10-24

This movie is impossible to watch. It's not even that it's bad (it IS bad), but it's that it doesn't offer anything. It's cruel, but a totally banal way. It's not some despicable movie with an agenda like Dogville or Postal. It's just a lousy and uninteresting person presented without comment.

Doc Victor - 2015-10-24

You got it mostly right, Hooker. Chris Kyle's story is interesting because he imposed himself in the media and sold his brand to anyone willing to listen, and was then killed unceremoniously in a bizarrely timed and tragic incident. Now you can buy a Chris Kyle shirt at Dick's.
IMHO he made a lot of unverifiable claims and didn't rate having a movie made about him, although I think he would be pleased at his emergence as such a culturally polarizing figure.

Jimmy Labatt - 2015-10-24

You hit the nail on the head with "bland." The action scenes were bland, the acting was bland, the story was bland. That's all Clint Eastwood knows these days.

I mean Jesus Clint, if you're going to make a movie glorifying a lying, murderous psychopath, at least make the damn thing interesting!

Jimmy Labatt - 2015-10-24

And by "bland" I of course meant "banal"

infinite zest - 2015-10-24

Huh.. I was actually thinking of checking it out because of all the Chris Kyle lying controversy and his subsequent death. I thought this was all made after that happened, like whether or not he made stuff up, he's still now another victim of gun violence, ironically on a shooting range on home turf type of stuff, which at least for a while seemed to be Eastwood's angle (see Gran Torino, Letters From Iwo Jima, etc.)

Kinda sucks that everybody who's told me that this is just another brofest for Call of Duty fans is probably right, because I really did like Eastwood, before he started talking to chairs and such, poor guy..

Doc Victor - 2015-10-24

I concede not being quite smart enough to deny the presence of an agenda in Dogville, but Postal??? Was there something going on besides Uwe Boll turning the crank?

Hooker - 2015-10-24

I think it's pretty easy to see through the thin veneer of Postal's surface layer to see exactly what kind of lousy things Uwe believes / finds funny.

That guy - 2015-10-24

What goes on in Dogville? I haven't seen it. I suppose you'd not recommend that I do?

infinite zest - 2015-10-24

What goes on in Dogville stays in Dogville... I dunno, I liked Dogville and I don't get the comparison. If you like Lars Von Trier it's worth watching; I believe the "agenda" is kind of being an end to the Dogme 95 movement, which he helped create, or at least popularize, and then rejected. So maybe the comparison is that Eastwood rejected making good movies, and again started talking to chairs, which would fit right in with a Dogme 95 film actually..

infinite zest - 2015-10-24

(but that chair would have to already be there.. something.. I dunno)

yogarfield - 2015-10-24

dogme 95 lives

15th - 2015-10-24

Most of Von Trier's films are dumb, but all are worth your time. Eastwood's are dumb and not worth the film stock.

Jeriko-1 - 2015-10-24

Five stars, didn't watch. It seemed like Kyle was being used to tow a gross narrative that 'Well adjusted and strong people don't get PTSD and make something of themselves.'

Which gives me some smug satisfaction he was fucking -ENDED- by PTSD. Yes, uh... I guess I am glad he's dead. I guess it's a flaw of my character and makes me a bad person. But seriously fuck that guy.

Cena_mark - 2015-10-24

He's like the 2nd biggest liar to have a movie made about him, right behind Frank Dux, which Blood Sport was based on. Blood Sport is a way better film.

15th - 2015-10-24

I actually really loved watching this movie though. This scene is like a next-level Kids in the Hall skit.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2015-10-25

Jesus Christ. PoE TV's kneejerk aversion to critically acclaimed things everyone else in the universe enjoys has long surpassed self-parody.

Collectively, this site is too good for Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Mad Men, Citizen Kane, The Wire, the entirety of the AFI's top 100 movies list, every Academy Award winner since 1940, and erections.

What the fuck do you people enjoy besides mid-90's PC games?

EvilHomer - 2015-10-25

Who here hates Mad Men? I've said it's really slow and boring, which it is, but it's good enough so far as TV shows go. I don't regret watching it. Citizen Kane was fine, maybe a bit overrated but certainly not bad, Game of Thrones is excellent but inferior to the books, and Breaking Bad would have been a great show, except they never resolved the mystery of who Heisenberg was. That bummed me out.

Mid-90s PC games suck. Late 90s/early-00s is the one you want.

Hooker - 2015-10-25

Well, if you take 100 or so people and show them a list of entertainment things, and then each time one person says they don't like it you cross it out, you're going to wind up with nearly off the list crossed out. I don't think you get to throw a hissyfit over this.

That said, Mad Men and The Wire are boring and Game of Thrones is pretty bad.

Cena_mark - 2015-10-25

We don't hate this film cause critics liked it, we hate it cause of its political message.

That guy - 2015-10-25

Anyone else want to step forward and say they thought Citizen Kane "was fine, maybe a bit overrated but certainly not bad", or just EH?

I don't even know what 'a bit overrated' would mean with that movie. Does that mean you don't think it was one of the best movies ever, just one of the top 10 American movies of the 20th C.?

infinite zest - 2015-10-25

I lied all my way through my film school classes about having seen Citizen Kane. I think I watched it for the first time a couple of years ago, pretty fucked up on codiene. And I remember thinking this must be what little kids these days feel when their dads tell them that Star Wars is so good, but for 30-somethings. At this point we've seen so many parodies and attempts at making the "next Citizen Kane/Star Wars" that it's hard to really enjoy it the way the original audience did. It's kind of like when I went to Original Ray's Pizza and was like "it's ok.." because I'd had better New York Style Pizza. People swear by something as being "the best" that it just creates an anxiety of influence to make the same thing only better.

That being said, where's that Ben & Jen remake of Casablanca I was hearing so much about? I want Piano Guy to be replaced by Drake and beats by Diplo. That movie needed 200% more wub-wub

memedumpster - 2015-10-25

I never saw this movie, but SDC is right. There are no bad episodes of Star Trek, Doctor Who, or a bad James Bond movie if you're a fan. Star Wars prequels? George Lucas made those, at least he did it. If you love movies, or a movie franchise, or some particular creative person that does stuff you like, don't love those things conditionally. It's asinine to love anything that you love conditionally. There are movies that will move you personally more than others, there's nothing wrong with seeking those out while you at least acknowledge the effort it takes to make a totally self-aware intentionally bad movie, at least, and a daring try at something greater, at times.

I like Citizen Kane for the same reason I like the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

EvilHomer - 2015-10-25

"One of the greatest", *maybe*, but with Citizen Kane, we're not talking "one of the greatest". Citizen Kane is constantly topping lists of "Greatest Film Ever Made". Greatest. Ever. Made.

Citizen Kane is not The Greatest Film Ever Made, and certainly not so far up the scale of Great Films that its virtually flawless reputation within the filmfag community can be justified - at least not objectively, based solely on its own merits as a film.

memedumpster - 2015-10-25

If you could only recommend one movie to humanity, what would it be?

That guy - 2015-10-26

The broader the scope of a 'greatest movie ever made' discussion, the dumber the discussion is, granted.

The narrower the scope, the easier it is to say that Citizen Kane is damn excellent, even with its flaws. It's had elements lifted from it forever, so that's a big part of the effect not landing.... ....and then there's just dumb people, who throw off the curve for everything.

Cena_mark - 2015-10-26

The Dark Knight.

EvilHomer - 2015-10-26

Meme - I wouldn't recommend anything. We are all free individuals with our own unique goals; everybody's priorities are different when it comes to the sorts of film they enjoy, and it is not my business to dictate taste for humanity as a whole.

That said, if I was FORCED to, I would recommend KissxSis 4.

Old_Zircon - 2015-10-26

"We are all free individuals with our own unique goals"

Nope.

EvilHomer - 2015-10-26

Well OK, maybe not you.

Eiken is a good choice, too.

That guy - 2015-10-26

Perfect timing, Cena.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-10-31

I hate it because its basically the romantic, dewy eyed version of Team America: World Police.

gravelstudios - 2015-10-24

I didn't see this movie, but I didn't believe it could be that bad.

This scene perfectly encapsulates everything that is wrong with America. It is a stunning distillation of our national psychosis.

Two Jar Slave - 2015-10-24

Elaborate.

Waugh - 2015-10-24

ahahah https://youtu.be/u2j578jTBCY

Two Jar Slave - 2015-10-24

Derrida's right. France is better because students don't ask professors to elaborate on things.

Waugh - 2015-10-24

france is better because american ratdicks like you are reviled

Kabbage - 2015-10-24

Yeah, that's the thing. It's a very French thing to be like, "I will talk and you will listen, and that will be that," as if having a discussion or an argument is a form of abuse.

infinite zest - 2015-10-24

The only other scene I've seen from this movie is the baby scene, which I'm sure you've all seen too. Eastwood's got enough money that he could order a CGI Cooper if he's afraid of his confidence with a baby.. or maybe the rehearsal take was the best one or the baby wouldn't stop crying, or didn't cry, whatever they were going for, but how the hell did this get nominated for Best PIcture? And don't say the C word. Plenty of directors have directed shitty movies after winning Best Picture; it's not an auto-nomination for Zemeckis' or Spielberg's oscar bait, so why would it be for Eastwood?

infinite zest - 2015-10-24

Actually Coppola and Polanski are better examples, since Flight and Warhorse still got nominations despite being either preachy or just plain dumb horse movie, but did any of you see Youth Without Youth or The Ninth Gate? Because you didn't and if you did it was terrible and nobody would've cared if it was the director of The Room or Apocalypse Now or Rosemary's Baby.

Two Jar Slave - 2015-10-24

...I liked The Ninth Gate.

I didn't know it was directed by Polanski till just now. I thought it was an unusual gothic caper about an antique book dealer. Pretty cool, but no big deal. Not sure how this relates to your point, if at all.

Waugh - 2015-10-24

OR YOU COULD TRY ASKING SOMEONE A WORTHWHILE QUESTION, INSTEAD OF SNAPPING YOUR FINGERS AND ISSUING IMPERATIVES
YOU INSUFFERABLE, BRAYING LIVESTOCK

That guy - 2015-10-24

I'm sure it got a nod because a portion of the academy have a conservative streak, and/or to suck up to red states.

Also, yeah... heaven forbid anyone should have to defend their assertions.

Waugh - 2015-10-24

you are utter fucking trash, why don't you make me elaborate on that

poorwill - 2015-10-24

infinite zest - 2015-10-24

I wanted to like 9th Gate, but it was kind of like how I wanted to like Eyes Wide Shut. I should give both movies another shot some day, but I'm too busy watching Goosebumps.

Lef - 2015-10-24

5 stars for Derridas Tan.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-10-24

It must be comforting, being able to see the world in such simple terms.

This is why so many people become conservatives, I guess. They just get overwhelmed by the complexities of the world and feel the need to boil things down into easy-to-grasp concepts.

We don't have jobs because Mexicans steal them because Mexicans are evil. It's not because the ultra-rich who run everything manipulate Congress through campaign contributions to make it easier for their companies to outsource production overseas where there are fewer labor laws & environmental protections so they can produce the goods cheaper. If we just keep out Mexicans, we'll all have great jobs!

Waugh - 2015-10-24

lol what is propaganda

Cena_mark - 2015-10-24

At lease propaganda has a point and a message. You are below propaganda.

Old_Zircon - 2015-10-24

Conservatives aren't anywhere near cornering the market on this.

Waugh - 2015-10-24

bitch please you can denigrate better than that

Waugh - 2015-10-24

wait nvm you literally get your worldview from children's cartoons you probably can't

Cena_mark - 2015-10-24

I watch cartoons, I don't get my world view from it. That's what wrestling is for.

Waugh - 2015-10-24

lol except you seriously just pointed to a cartoon to express your political perspective. so was it cartoons or wrestling that taught you it's cute to be a fatuous, boring turd?

Cena_mark - 2015-10-24

I did. It's just a good quote to point out that type of world view. See there's a character who's a huge conspiracy theorist, and Steven was feeling bad because he pointed out the holes in his theory thereby destroying the conspiracy theory guy's whole sense of self.
Pearl can be rather fatuous, you're right.
Cartoons have a lot to say now a days. They've grown up a lot, which is something you have to get around to doing.

Miss Henson's 6th grade class - 2015-10-24

Yeah, Waugh. Conservative trolls are always the most interesting, serious-minded people you find on any message board.

Waugh - 2015-10-24

hahaha. HAHAHAHAHAH

memedumpster - 2015-10-24

Hey Feartooth (your name writ large in heaven).

Did you know that the plaque on your teeth use ion channels to communicate with one another just like the neurons do in your brain? When the outer layer of scum feels threatened, like when you brush, it hardens to protect the inner scum. When the inner scum is starving, the outer scum softens to let nutrients reach them. You see, plaque treats itself better than you treat others.

I think your plaque to be the human, and maybe one day it will push the divided self-destroying bacterium (your neurons) out of your skull and take its rightful place among us. Surely, your yellow teeth are tired of smelling your fear.

Arise Tribe of the Yellow Teeth, we await you.

Waugh - 2015-10-24

whoa. tryhard

Cena_mark - 2015-10-24

You're mean Waugh. You're like this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlZkhVV9nCY

EvilHomer - 2015-10-24

Do you really think Waugh's like that Pearl? All whiny and Utena-like? Perhaps he is, but I don't quite see the resemblance yet.

Peridot seems pretty cool, though, I like her.

Waugh - 2015-10-24

lol right it's just like in this one episode of invader zim or something
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTKht7E1Brc

RedRust - 2015-10-24

@ Cena Mark But the conspiracy guy got the "polymorphic sentinent rocks" theory right!

Cena_mark - 2015-10-24

No, no, no. I was saying Waugh is like Peridot in that clip. Waugh is like Gilda before her redemption. Peridot is rather popular. You should check out the scene where she tries to hide in Steven's bathroom.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvyJScUp9mA

Cena_mark - 2015-10-24

But his sneeple theory was wrong.

EvilHomer - 2015-10-24

What? No. What's wrong with Peridot? She doesn't seem like Gilda at all. Rather, she seems like a sweet combination of Megaman, Vegeta, Rainbow Dash, and Diamond Tiara. P-dot's totally chill; just telling it like it is.

Pearl is the bad one in that clip. Pearl's obviously an emotionally-fragile narcissist and secretly ashamed of who she really is. She's happy lording it up around small fry like Steven Universe, people who'll kiss her ass, but as soon as she's confronted by someone on her level or above, she feels threatened and gets all mean n' nasty. Basically, Pearl's a Woody Allen - bitter, neurotic, and full of herself. Nothing like the easy, unassuming superiority of Peridot.

Cena_mark - 2015-10-24

What's going on there is Peridot is treating her like a piece of property. The Crystal Gems don't go by the home world caste systems. There Pearl can be free. Homeworld also looks down upon fusions, like Garnet. Peridot is being a nasty space racist.

EvilHomer - 2015-10-24

But she IS a piece of property, right? Originally, on her home world?

Morality is relative and defined by culture. By expecting Peridot to conform to their own Earth-biased views about freedom and the nature of social contracts, Pearl and Steven are being cultural imperialists.

Cena_mark - 2015-10-24

Peridot is like an antebellum southerner going up north and harassing the free blacks. Totally not cool. It's especially not cool of Peridot at this point since she's technically their prisoner.

Cena_mark - 2015-10-24

Here's her biggest bigoted rant thus far.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDJJBxGWln0

EvilHomer - 2015-10-24

OK, let's say you were out in a cutter, dealing with a stranded civilian, and the civilian says to you "Fuck off, Coast Guard. I don't have to listen to you or do what you tell me. The government does not own me; I am a sovereign citizen." What would you do?

It's the same dilemma facing Peridot. Pearl's trying to pull this bullshit, waaa waaa I'm-a-sovereign-citizen, no-more-slavery routine, and Peridot's just like, hey, whatever bro, I've got to do my job here, and that job is to build a drill-thing and keep y'all safe. Let the sheep be a sheep and the sheepdog be a sheepdog.

Peridot is a Coastie of Space. You should be on her side.

EvilHomer - 2015-10-24

What's bigoted about THAT rant? She's just talking about the Chain of Command, and the fact that an E6 shouldn't be taking orders from an E1 and an E2. Again, Coastie of Space, you of all people should understand and respect Peridot.

Cena_mark - 2015-10-24

It the waters are under my jurisdiction I'd show the sovereign citizen punk what he's up against by reciting the CFRs that give me the boarding authority.
Building the drill isn't her job, she's assisting the enemy. She's a prisoner. She can shut up about the home world stuff. She's lucky Steven is so nice.

EvilHomer - 2015-10-24

>> I'd show the sovereign citizen punk what he's up against by reciting the CFRs that give me the boarding authority.

Right, and that's what P-dizzy is doing here. She's reciting the CGR, Code of Gem Regulations, and showing all those sovereign citizen punks - Pearl, Amnyfest, Spike the Dragon - exactly what they're up against.

Hooker - 2015-10-24

It's weird watching two trolls going at it.

Cena_mark - 2015-10-24

Homer and I aren't trolls. Waugh is. He's a damn dirty clod of a troll.

Homer, even though I find your perspective odd, I'm glad you've found a Steven Universe character to relate to. That is the gate way. I would likely not be an MLP fan if I didn't like Applejack so much.

Hooker - 2015-10-24

Right. I was talking about you and Waugh. But Homer _is_ a troll as well, if we're being entirely accurate here.

EvilHomer - 2015-10-25

I'm not a troll. Trolls say things they don't mean in order to get a negative reaction out of people. I say things I do mean in order to generate discussion and enrich people's lives. Like with me and Cena here; we are not "trolling", we are having a lively philosophical discussion about sheepdogs, the delicate balance between individual rights and social obligations, and Steven Universe. As for Waugh, he might troll sometimes, but did you ever stop to think of how HE feels? People are very mean to him sometimes; maybe if you Waugh more kindly, he'd be kinder to you.

Cena - yeah, it was the same way with me; Rainbow Dash was my gateway pony, the character I could relate to who got me over my initial reluctance to watch MLP.

... but I'm not saying I'm going to watch Steven Universe! And if I did, my gateway character probably wouldn't be Peridot. It'd most likely be Sour Cream.

Cena_mark - 2015-10-25

Sour Cream? Ha ha ha. That joke is on you then. You see, each of the cool kids mirrors one of the crystal gems. Sour Cream is the one which is most like Pearl.

EvilHomer - 2015-10-25

WHAT?! Oh, fuck that then. Sugilite is my alternate, I could pick her instead.

EvilHomer - 2015-10-25

When you say "mirrors", do you mean they're vaguely similar in personality (like how Daring Doo "mirrors" Rainbow Dash) or do you mean they've actually got some kind of magical/spiritual connection (like how Usagi Tuskino is both a normal Japanese schoolgirl AND a reincarnation of Princess Serenity)? Because I don't see any similarities between Sour Cream and Pearl, except maybe for the fact that they're both tall.

Cena_mark - 2015-10-25

I mean as in slight visual and personality similarities.
Here's a picture with each gem by her corresponding cool kid.
Pearl was my least favorite gem when I first started watching the show, but she grew on me. Sure she comes off as a nag and a dork, but I've come to find her endearing.
She's gone beyond her servant class to become a great engineer and warrior. She's revolutionary.

EvilHomer - 2015-10-25

Oh, OK, phew. So Pearl and Sour Cream have nothing to do with each other. That's good; crisis averted.

Cena_mark - 2015-10-25

Whoops forgot the link

EvilHomer - 2015-10-25

They don't look the same. That's just the lighting, and also the fact that RebSu is unimaginative and uses an embarrassingly limited color palette.

As for the clip, it's a scene from Revolutionary Girl Utena, with wimpy music from 80s anime, and the fat character is riding Nimbus from DBZ. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that Pearl got stabbed, but come on! I'm telling you, Cena, this show steals more material than Sonichu does.

Also, does Spike the Dragon ALWAYS cry like a bitch? Surely he sacks up, and then, in later episodes, turns into a late-season Simon-from-Gurren-Lagann... right?

Cena_mark - 2015-10-25

Steven cries a lot, but he mans up when he has to. He's a sensitive guy. His favorite cartoon is Crying Breakfast Friends.
Also Amnyfest is not fat. This show is very progressive it's characters present a body positive message. Rose Quartz and Amneyfest have given many larger girls an opportunity to cosplay as characters that actually fit their body type.
Amneyfest isn't riding the Nimbus. Its just some cloud.

EvilHomer - 2015-10-25

Well of course they didn't CALL IT Nimbus; that would be a breach of copyright, and RebSu is far too clever to make such a mistake (in fact, the care she takes over copyright issues is really the one thing that sets her apart from CWC, explaining why she succeeds where he fails).

It's still Nimbus, tho.

>> His favorite cartoon is Crying Breakfast Friends.

:O Is that true?!

>> very progressive it's characters present a body positive message... given many larger girls an opportunity to cosplay

So, fat. Just like I said.

I have nothing against a show having a body positive message, by why does this show's message only include fat people? Why does SU discriminate against, say, anorexics, or bodybuilders, or Silicone-Enhanced-Americans? Jessica Nigri and Bianca Beauchamp deserve a chance to cosplay just as much as Fatty O'Butterham.

Cena_mark - 2015-10-25

The Nimbus thingie only appeared in that episode anyhow. Again this was yet another shout out to anime fans, as opposed to plagarism.
Anorexics can cosplay as Pearl, bodybuilders as Jasper. See, the show has many diverse body types. Nigri and Beauchamp have all of Marvel, DC, anime, and videogames to choose from.
Here's a sweet clip of them watching Crying Breakfast Friends.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JB0Yzm8UW9U
Amethyst doesn't get it. She wonders why anyone would watch a cartoon where everyone cries all the time.
Also, why do you hate Pearl so much?

EvilHomer - 2015-10-26

I don't hate Pearl. I don't like the way she's a jerk to Peridot, but I don't "hate" her, just as I don't "hate" Applejack or Twilight Sparkle. I think the only SU character I actually hate (again, not watching the show, not going to) is SU himself. He is the worst. The worst!

>> Nigri and Beauchamp have all of Marvel, DC, anime, and videogames to choose from.

But they don't have Steven Universe to choose from, because Steven Universe is exclusionary. SU should be renamed, to The Fat Chick's Country Club.

(NOTE: I also like Amnyfest. I have nothing against her; she seems cool, and if it weren't for the cruddy-looking character design, she could be the one I'd mark for. My beef here is only with the show's lack of diversity)

memedumpster - 2015-10-24

Doc Victor - 2015-10-24

This gets my stars

Two Jar Slave - 2015-10-24

This movie seems terrible, but I got a laugh out of the last shot there. It's like they really wanted to do a heroic pan-up from his boots to his chiseled face as he stood with his clenched fists by his sides, Terminator style, but then they remembered this movie was supposed to be a drama or something.

magnesium - 2015-10-24

Isn't this basically the speech about assholes and pussies from Team America, but less vulgar?

Cena_mark - 2015-10-24

Holy shit, you're right. Ghost stars.*****

EvilHomer - 2015-10-24

Sort of. It's actually taken from the writings of Col Dave Grossman, but Team America's "assholes and pussies" speech deals with the same subject matter.

http://www.killology.com/sheep_dog.htm

Two Jar Slave - 2015-10-24

Really, the mark of any serious philosophical treatise is that it can be read verbatim as the opening monologue for a Max Payne game.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-10-31

I wrote my comment before reading this. Bravo

chumbucket - 2015-10-25

Kyle controversies aside, this was just a bad movie.. And I like Cooper.

Kid Fenris - 2015-10-25

Yeah, that's a great analogy for the kids. You don't want to be wolves! You want to be sheepdogs!

No one puts sheepdogs on cool t-shirts or names Minnesota basketball teams after them.

Old_Zircon - 2015-10-26

In case it hasn't been covered above, the opening monologue of this scene is almost verbatim from On Combat by Adam Grossman. It was already a deeply wrongheaded metaphor with virtually no basis in the reality of human behavior and deeply fascistic undertones before it made it into this movie, but this boils it down to the social Darwinist core. Because what they're really saying here is, of course, that there is a genetically selected class of people who should be above the laws and taboos of society because they an only they were born to guide the helpless masses who are genetically incapable of self determination. Say what you want about self determination, the delusion that everyone is a free agent is still a hell of a lot less dangerous than the sheep/sheepdogs/wolves bullshit.

Dave Grossman. Adam Grossman is an industrial guitarist!

I think you're reading too much into the sheepdog theory, OZ, at least so far as Col Grossman, and perhaps even Chief Kyle (I don't know enough about him to say), are concerned. There needn't be anything "genetic" to differentiate between sheep/ sheepdogs/ wolves, and while the sheepdog theory is doubtlessly "statist", it is not necessarily "fascist" - while the sheepdog theory may certainly be used as a justification for "fascism" (however you choose to define that word), it needn't have to be. Moreover, I put it to you that the sheepdog theory is actually not that controversial - it is simply a rewording of the same fundamental logic that has justified the existence of state authority, ever since centralized societies first sprang into being.

All governments are corporations: businesses whose core industry is the application of force. A government can be said to be sovereign when it has (and can maintain) a monopoly on the use of force (violence) within a given geographic area - without this, a government is not a government, but a gang, or a mob, or a rebel army. A government defines what is and is not "legal" within the area over which it claims sovereignty, and then leverages it's own corporate privilege in a variety of ways - such as through legalized "theft" (taxation), legalized "assault" (justice), and legalized "murder" (military action).

Why is the violence of the state OK? How can the members of the ruling caste sleep at night, and why should the underclasses put up with the state at all? Well, because - sheepdogs. The state justifies having a monopoly on force, because (it claims) without the presence of a ruling authority that can regulate violence, civilized society would be impossible. Without a government, there would be nothing but anarchy in our cities and towns - which means wanton murder, rape, robbery, and all sorts of other horrible things! In order to stop small-time predators from preying on the weak, one BIG predator needs to step up and ensure everyone plays nice: the state. Criminals, terrorists, private businessmen and the landowning kulaks - they are the wolves who prey upon the common man. Cops, soldiers, tax collectors and politicians - they are the sheepdogs, whose violence the rest of us accept as the price for keeping the wolves at bay.

Now I'm not necessarily saying this is *right*; you can feel free to disagree with the sheepdog theory if you want! All I am doing is pointing out that it is *not controversial*; unless you are an anarchist, extreme libertarian, or sovereign citizen, the sheepdog argument (shorn of the genetic component and a bit of the romanticism) is one that you'd almost certainly accept.
