I never liked Spaceballs. Besides a couple of fun throwaway references in History of the World Pt. 1 Mel Brooks didn't go full-reference-mode until this one, ushering in so many Family Guys and Mel Brooks' decline from comedic genius to Parody Guy. But it's better than Star Wars.

It's fine if you don't like it, but calling it "an Adam Sandler comedy minus the cartoony violence" makes no sense. That's not an accurate description of Spaceballs or Adam Sandler movies.

I thought that might be the case. I tend to hate everything about the 80s, having lived through them, so maybe I'm fundamentally incapable of enjoying "Spaceballs". I am literally the last person they should pick as a guest on "I Love the 80s".

It's a genuinely funny parody back when parodies were actually aimed at established things instead of movies and tv shows that were only 6 seconds old and would never last, culturally, making the entire thing dated as hell. I would say Spaceballs works because it is generally timeless.
Not sure you could ever really say that about Adam Sandler movies which have just become one, long, exhausting experiment in how far a Hollywood grifter can keep pushing the envelope and making money for as little work as possible.

A person taking a gigantic shit would itself be a punchline in an 80s comedy, or an Adam Sandler comedy. I'm just sayin'.

But in real life it's a measure of your sincerity, which I appreciate.

I know this movie is stupid but it's basically a Mad magazine parody that somehow got produced as a feature. And I think that's what 8 year old me liked so much.

I also got confirmation last week that the "assholes" scene is extremely funny to 5 year old girls.

If anything, it's still somewhat timely, especially considering how everything from the toys/collectables to hair products have been prepared for The Force Awakens. "Moichandising", indeed.
