ok, that was worth it.

Good that there's no spoilers in tags. Fast forward to about 0:45 for the impatient, but probably worth watching in full.

Reefer Fez - 2015-10-24

If you can read Japanese, it gives the spoiler at 0:51.

Hooker - 2015-10-24

It's an important message that giving all these women the same tomboy haircut strips them of their identity.

gravelstudios - 2015-10-24

I think the only reason this worked is because they very carefully chose actors with the right facial features. If they had just picked a bunch of random teenagers, it wouldn't have come off so well.

Old_Zircon - 2015-10-24

The secret was that they've had nose jobs, right?

teethsalad - 2015-10-24

probably a bunch of kabuki dudes

males play female roles

Binro the Heretic - 2015-10-24

I thought using twenty-somethings to play high school students was an American thing. Is it a worldwide phenomenon?

Aelric - 2015-10-24

Japan will reduce the age of actors to high school for as long as possible both in character roles and lie in the actors bios because there is an idealization of High School due to the cultural obsession with 'impermanence as beauty', high school representing the end of childhood and the beginning of a grim, work-obsessed adulthood. That's why so many dramas, comedies, manga, novels, anime and porn is set in high school.

It's a universal thing, but Japan is absolutely the largest practitioner.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-10-24

Yeesh! that's even worse.

badideasinaction - 2015-10-24

I imagine there's also pragmatics - child and teen actors have a bad habit of being hit with the awkward or ugly stick while in the midst of puberty, not to mention all the usual personality problems that happen at that age resulting in trainwrecks off-camera.

But mostly creepy fetishization of high schoolers.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-10-24

But see, that would be a healthier portrayal of teens. I was already a self-conscious kid who got bullied on a daily basis. Seeing tall, physically-fit fashion models with perfect hair & skin portrayed as representing the "average" high school kid didn't help my self image.

In the 1980s, all the movies that were supposed to be about teenagers featured fully-grown, fully-developed adults who had natural good looks as well as the benefit of diet & exercise coaches.

Even the "ugly" and "nerdy" kids were just the same good-looking adults in frumpy clothes, prop glasses and unflattering makeup. And that would usually lead to a scene where they got cleaned up, changed clothes and went instantly from outcast ugly duckling to popular beautiful swan.

duck&cover - 2015-10-24

I have an idea for a movie, "Progeria High," with Sean Connery and Michael Caine as students.

Old_Zircon - 2015-10-24

That's part of why The Goonies was such a stand out of its era, then and in retrospect. It was so rare to see characters that age that felt real and relateable, especially in that kind of movie.

garcet71283 - 2015-10-24

The message is that Asian men look like Asian women.

And no, not the other way around.

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-10-24

Terrific! This put me to mind of my high school social studies teacher, who one day announced to the class "Ladies: thanks to modern cosmetics, there is no reason for any of you to be ugly".

That guy - 2015-10-24

classic

Reefer Fez - 2015-10-24

The last message says basically "Anyone can be cute using Shiseido."

Waugh - 2015-10-24

was it really not obvious to you they were male

TheSupafly - 2015-10-24

It was obvious what was going to happen, but by the end 3 def looked like women dressed as boys.

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-10-24

The one at 1:45 is the sensitive one.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2015-10-24

It was obvious from the start.

Tough American Bouncer - 2015-10-25

It is pretty clear after first 4 seconds.

memedumpster - 2015-10-25

So, all the spirit sparkles and ancient artifacts that swap genders in Japan is really just a team of makeup artists?

Welp, there's the death of magic.

Nominal - 2020-10-15

"What's with the obvious wig?"
*looks back to face*
"Oh, this is some kabuki drag piece?"
