Mister Yuck - 2015-11-22

My union just built a training tower so we can start going after this work. We get /hour, plus benes.

Mister Yuck - 2015-11-22

Didn't mean that to be a reply.

infinite zest - 2015-11-22

Wow you do this? LIke I said below I might be more ok with heights than some people, but I could NOT do this. Cheers!

Mister Yuck - 2015-11-22

No, and I don't plan to, currently. I'm an apprentice electrician, and our local is now training people to do this, so I may end up at least getting certified so I'm a little diversified if construction slows down again.

Chancho - 2015-11-22

When I did electrical work, the union had a provision in the contract that if you worked at over 80', you got double time. But, the companies would pressure guys to take straight time so they were working on cell towers at these crazy heights for about an hour.

I asked one guy why he accepted straight time and he said "Do you want to get laid off?"

He also told me about a father-son team that he knew that did this work regularly. One day the son slipped and his dad watched him fall 1500' onto the ground in front of him. I asked how he fell and he said "Shit happens"

Old_Zircon - 2015-11-23

This thread is a good example of why, for all their flaws, we need unions.

The added context makes it so much worse. To imagine this guy may have been paid less than to do this is mind boggling and deplorable.

"Only 60 feet to the top." Fuck you.

theSnake - 2015-11-22

no no no no no no no

infinite zest - 2015-11-22

Holy shit 5:30. I think I have one less year to live now. D:

I can sort of relate; I got paid 7.50 an hour to climb and change lightbulbs on the ceiling and marquee letters regardless of brutal Wisconsin weather, and often to save time and get out of there qucker I'd just climb over the marquee and do the other side, with barely nothing to stand on. If I had fallen from the ceiling I would've most certainly died (a few people have in the theatre's history) and probably broken several bones at best if I landed the right way off the marquee. But, I like to climb, but the day I lost my wallet with a fresh Christmas 0 bill inside into a space where I probably would've probably fallen off of to get it back was the day I wondered "why am I doing this?" :(

infinite zest - 2015-11-22

"brutal" being subjective.. I was freezing my ass off today and I looked at the weather and it said 48 degrees.. It's much colder in other places that people live than Wisconsin.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2015-11-22

ayyy I remember this one. I also recall it attracted the attention of the Feds because of safety violations.

SolRo - 2015-11-22

I'd suck dick on the filthiest street corner in the dirtiest slum before I'd do this.

So glad I managed to get free skilled trade training.

memedumpster - 2015-11-22

This is proof that people will do things far worse than sucking dick for dick sucker wages. This may be the founding principle of oligarchy.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2015-11-22

What training did you get?

SolRo - 2015-11-22

Auto mechanic. Local college has a free program (minus books). After that I got into a company paid training program for a luxury car brand, which starts in January.

memedumpster - 2015-11-22

This is a job for robots.

infinite zest - 2015-11-22

Yeah.. maybe this is a dumb question but is there a reason why the elevator doesn't just go all the way to the top? A small elevator wouldn't necessarily affect the tower's signal, would it?

memedumpster - 2015-11-22

Well, either the species that can send people to the moon and probes out of the solar system lack the engineering prowess to build a tower with an elevator that goes all the way to the top, or it's money.

I'd say it's just cheaper to send the Great Plummeting Apes to the top, and get a new one when one breaks.

infinite zest - 2015-11-22

I just wonder how these cellphone corporations' executives sleep at night knowing that this is a very real thing that lines their pockets with 1000x the hourly profits..

Oh yeah, with several supermodels and lots of blow. My bad.

SolRo - 2015-11-22

Good luck getting a robot to work for an hour.

memedumpster - 2015-11-23

There's no way a robot would be cheaper to run, truly, but I wasn't arguing from cost effectiveness. The most cost effective thing for the American public right now is a Communist Revolution.* I just meant that on a sane planet, soft, squishy, sentient things wouldn't be made to do this for survival tokens.

*Not really, I just want a higher ranking on my killchain baseball card.

Rafiki - 2015-11-22

At this height, you can see 55 miles to the horizon and all the way down to your death.
