Hey! that cloud looks like a dinosaur with tits!

No. It is just a cloud.

infinite zest - 2015-11-24

I remember seeing this with my dad in the theatres and he had sort of a similar prediction. I was too busy being disappointed.

I've heard the notion casually advanced that Jar-Jar Binks must have been a Sith for how he screwed everything up, but I like that this guy backed it up pretty well. And I do like to imagine Lucas had a good idea for a proper twist, even if he ended up not going that route.

badideasinaction - 2015-11-25

It is one of the few fan theories that has made me stop and think a bit. I think for me the nagging thought is George Lucas' ham-handed "mirroring" meant there should have been a shocking twist in episode 2 at the final battle and instead they got Dooku.

That being said, unless he's under a gag order because of the Disney buyout I can't imagine George wouldn't take this opportunity to gloat about how he had a twist bigger that Empire's ready to drop in Episode 2 but fan bitching meant we never got it.

Cena_mark - 2015-11-24

The main argument I'd make against this is the claim that Lucas changed his plans due to fan backlash. I think at this point Lucas was no longer listening to them.

infinite zest - 2015-11-24

Yeah, that's definitely true for EP 1, given the backlash from fans who hated the Special Editions' added material, most notably Return's replacement of the original Palace band scene with the goofy new CGI characters and horrible song that accompanied it. But I remember a big selling point of EP 2 was the rumor, which was confirmed by Lucas months in advance, that Jar Jar would only have a few lines and very little presence, because that movie could've easily tanked otherwise and the franchise probably would've gone bankrupt.

EvilHomer - 2015-11-24

The plan changing is a small part, presumably to explain why Jar Jar wasn't outed as a Sith master during the Prequels. Otherwise, the theory is surprisingly solid, and I would not be surprised if Jar Jar turns out to be the Big Bad of AbramsWars.

infinite zest - 2015-11-24

It'd be cool if Abrams were to take that risk, but I don't think he will. So far all I figure is that it's pretty much a sequel but with things turned upside down: The Alliance are now on top and the Empire's in hiding on Hoth, and Obi Wan Luke probably turns out to be evil, finally turning to the Empire, and his daughter's gonna have to kill him now.. something like that, which isn't very interesting. Maybe I'm wrong.. chances are I'll have the movie spoiled for me before I see it, if I bother to see it at all.

EvilHomer - 2015-11-24

I like the Plinkett Theory! The Sith have always been the good guys so far as I'm concerned - the "evil" of the Empire was only made possible because Darth Sidious was able to subvert the Jedi-controlled World Order, and in so doing, betray the basic principles of Sith ethics. As such, I'd love to see Luke finally fulfill his destiny, even if it means that the screenwriters - who have historically been cheerleaders for Jedi totalitarianism - will kill Master Skywalker off.

infinite zest - 2015-11-24

Well, according to imdb Luke's also gonna be in Episode 8, so we'll see! What's also cool is apparently Abrams isn't doing it, but rather Rian Johnson, who wrote and directed Looper, easily my favorite sci-fi movie in the last I-dunno-how-long. He's also confirmed as writer and director for Episode 9. But without spoiling anything, I could see what happens in Looper happening in Star Wars, just to tidy things up a bit. Then the whole trilogy ends with Jar Jar dancing on top of the Epcot Center or something.

infinite zest - 2015-11-24

Oh NM, somebody else is directing Ep 9 but Johnson is writing it

BHWW - 2015-11-24

People have gone so far with these theories as to compare Jar-Jar to The Mule from Asimov's Foundation series, the conquering warlord and mutant who took on the identity of a harmless jester-type.

Old_Zircon - 2015-11-24

I've sad it before and I'll say it again, Jar Jar was the only entertaining thing about the prequels. Not in the way Lucas thought he was, of course, but still the only thing about them I could enjoy on any level at all.

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-11-24

What probably came out of Joseph Cambell's mouth was Parisfal but what ended up in George Lucas' ear was Jar Jar.

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-11-24

Oh, Parsifal, fuck my eyes.

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-11-24

But paris is falling too.

EvilHomer - 2015-11-24

Jar Jar was the most memorable thing, I'll give you that.

Old_Zircon - 2015-11-24

I've had a lot of entertainment at Jar Jar's expense over the years, which is more than I can say for anything else from them.

Hooker - 2015-11-24

_This_ is the bullshit that EvilHomer will not tolerate.

EvilHomer - 2015-11-25

Oh no, I tolerate Jar Jar! I'm with OZ on this one; Jar Jar was probably the highlight of the Prequel trilogy - for all the wrong reasons, but hey, at least that's something. He also led to one of the best lines in modern Simpsons history: "Oh Jar Jar, everyone hates you but me".

The bullshit I will not tolerate is Lucas killing off Darth Maul in Epsiode I. Yes, I know Darth Maul didn't really die, but The Clone Wars came too late to salvage the Prequels.

infinite zest - 2015-11-25

I never really found Jar Jar to be any more annoying than R2D2, C3PO or Yoda and the Ewoks. They were cute and funny (until Yoda reveals himself), and that was Lucas' attempt with Jar Jar, to add some comic relief to an otherwise tragic story. It just didn't work is all.

Bus_Aint_Comin - 2015-11-24

well this explains why i bewilderingly loved jar jar

wtf japan - 2015-11-25

Isn't that basically the plot of Foundation and Empire?
