I don't really see too much of a difference really. If she truly identifies herself as a cartoon character than it's pretty much the same as gender identification in my book. As for the surgery itself, I dunno, if you can live without it, I say go for it if it makes you happy. I'm just sad because she was so much prettier in my eyes before, but I'm not her so I can't speak for anybody but myself.

As for surgery, removing ribs won't cause any long term damage; Marilyn Manson and many others have had ribs removed, so it's not like removing a vital organ; said could be said for limbs though.. you don't really need them to survive but I'd hesitate to cut off someone's arms even if they offered me a million bucks.

Sorry infinite zest, but I really don't see how the comparison works. On a personal level, yes it can matter a lot; but when placed against how many discrepancies placed on and between gender, it ends up being more vanity than practical.

It's the reverse equivalent of a untreated cleft lip & palate and asking whether it bothers them, not because it affects their speech and common mouth movements and daily activities, but because they look different.

Oh yeah, I guess it is, but it was the only example I could think off the top of my head, and I don't really keep up on what MM's doing too much. But models do get it done, and in some cases it's necessary for anybody as ribs sometimes puncture vital organs.

Comparing yourself to a community of people who might feel ostracised is a bit of a stretch though, you're right: hers' was a choice, whereas being born into a gender that's not one you're comfortable with is not a choice, and I'm sure her day-to-day life benefits from the surgery whereas most transgendered people have to struggle with being accepted in a society that's still kind of getting used to it.

Of course, when you start trying to differentiate quirky personal preferences from mental illness, it's not so simple anymore.

I still don't get the entire "let someone shoot themselves bit" mentality. If after all has been done to treat, assist or resolve a situation and said person still kills themselves, then what's the point of fretting about it? And I don't mean that as a sincere philosophy, because it isn't. It's a coping strategy for loss after a lot of work and effort. I just find it really cold that the lines "let them kill themselves, people die anyways" are not a matter of emotional resolve and relief, but an emotional conditioning for a shitty personality.
