his outrage is palpable

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

chumbucket - 2015-12-07

Stars given by the time he exclaims "dog's breakfast!"

I dunno if it counts as a tablet, but my mom got a new Nookbook reader the other day because her old one broke, so she texted me asking if I knew their wifi password. Of course I do, what kid doesn't take a picture of the back of their parents' modem when they're over.. anyway that wasn't the problem. It just autoconnects with no password prompt and no way to change it so it'll ask for one. So it's basically like what the fuck. Who designed this and why.

Also is this poeTV Watches People Take Things Apart Week? I'd be fine with that.

Accidie - 2015-12-07

I support PoeTV Watches People Take Things Apart Week.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-12-07

This guy is incredibly annoying. I get the impression he is very easily outraged and when he encounters something which perhaps deserves genuine scorn his mode of communication breaks down.

Also, yes, we're aware youre shocked and appalled. But *why* are you so shocked and appalled? What is the practical downside of all this bodgery, does the device not function or go on fire?

Old_Zircon - 2015-12-07

I think he's operating under the assumption that monocle dropping = guaranteed Youtube ad revenue.

Meerkat - 2015-12-07

We're watching his video so I guess he's right!

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-12-07

He's annoying to be sure ( a little Archie Lux coming thru ) but the subject deserves some scorn. Did we look at the same power supply? That thing is incredible! Where to even begin...

Nominal - 2015-12-07

You think a tablet with rechargeable grocery store batteries slapped together with saran wrap doesn't deserve a guffaw?

Old_Zircon - 2015-12-08

I was looking into recelling batteries for an early 2000s tablet PC last year. Turns out what he showed here is essentially what happens when you send your battery to one of those recelling companies (most laptop batteries are full of AA NiMH cells anyhow, but that doesn't mean rebuilding one is a good idea, even though it should work in theory). I ended up buying an off-brand clone of the battery which is probably not much better but at least it looks more or less right on the outside.

The God of Biscuits - 2015-12-07

This is essentially what all large commercial software projects end up looking like.

Meerkat - 2015-12-07

This is true. The thing is you get a bunch of talented guys writing software and they start out all meaning well and everything but then in come the guys that either don't give a damn or aren't as conscientious and it ends up like a nice bottle of fine wine that someone pissed in.

Juice Eggs McKenna - 2016-01-04

I've also seen shit like this. Not in electronics projects, but where the same design philosophy and level of fucks given applies.

MurgatroidMendelbaum - 2015-12-07

Don't know why, but I'd love to hear this guy describe the Millennium Falcon.

StanleyPain - 2015-12-07

Putting aside the annoying commentary, I am always fascinated by these kinds of electronic devices that seemingly took more work to put together than just making them properly.

In particular here, soldering a USB cable INTO a mini-USB port instead of getting a mini-USB cable. Fucking amazing.

Crackersmack - 2015-12-07

That thing is 100% definitely a prototype, the homemade power supply board proves that. Making that part took a fairly large amount of time and it's not that expensive to have even relatively small batches of custom PC boards made up.
