So much reverse engineering!

Shakespeare-mangling aside, this is awesome.

Nerd makes language for space jocks.

EvilHomer - 2015-12-13

What do you think compelled him to do this? Was the poor nerd a) being threatened with a beating unless he created a language for the space jocks, or was he b) being offered light sexual services from one of the space jock cheerleaders?

I'd like to imagine that the answer is A, but eventually the lead space jock's girlfriend will realize what a nice guy Mr Okrand is, and things will finally progress to B.

He was paid by the star trek people to do it, it was a job.

EvilHomer - 2015-12-13

Well, I hope the space jocks didn't learn about that! If they knew he had money, they probably would have taken it from him; perhaps by holding him upside down and shaking him, until all that Star Trek money fell out of his pocket.

EvilHomer - 2015-12-13

Also, I like how the Klingons screwed up their lines, and Mr Okrand just had to smile and go with it.

IF OGRE NOT WANT SAY SINGULAR OBJECT FOR IMPERATIVE SENTENCE, THEN KLINGON NOT USE SINGULAR OBJECT FOR IMPERATIVE SENTENCE. Glasses Man make CHANGE, NOW.

I like to paraphrase Jon Stewart and point out that the word you're looking for isn't "nerd," but "expert."

ashtar. - 2015-12-13

You seems to have misunderstood the meaning of the word "for," EH, which is maybe some kind of new record for you. Congratulations!

EvilHomer - 2015-12-14

Ooooohhh. Right, OK, I get what you meant now! I understand the meaning of the word "for", but as with many words in the English language, it can have various meanings depending upon the grammar used, and the context in which it appears. I assumed the preposition "for" was modifying the verb "to make", when in fact it was modifying the noun, "language"! In other words, I parsed your sentence as "At the behest of space jocks, a nerd made a language"; but I now take it that you meant "a nerd made a language; the language was intended to be used by space jocks". You did not mean to imply that the space jocks had any knowledge of, or direct input into, the nerd's linguistic activities, hence rendering my response nonsensical!

God, I feel silly. :S

Question: in Klingon, how complex is the relationship between prepositions and the words which they modify? Does the language have separate prepositional forms, depending on whether they are being used as adjectives or as adverbs? Like, if I was to tell a Klingon warrior, "I primed the photon torpedoes for you", I'd really like to know beforehand if there might be any ambiguity as to whether I mean to *help* him, or to *blow him up*...!

EXPERIENCE BEETCH

A friend of mine brought a Klingon-English dictionary to our final exams for English in highschool as a joke. I wound up borrowing it to add 'Walter Mitty is a coward' in Klingon as the last line in my essay section.

I got a perfect score on that exam.

Good times, good times.
