Holy shit.

Wow! I had no idea. Heavy stuff.

This hits home right now as my sister-in-law's ex is delusional right now too; he's currently posting on facebook about how he is the resurrected christ, and how the 'resurrected homosexual adolf hitler' is sending him signals and other things from the wreckage of MH17.

He's currently entirely unmedicated of course, and I'm almost certain that in the new year we'll have to call the cops on him for stalking her again.

Really what's shocking to me is how blasť the authorities are about his behaviour as compared to the UK where he'd be sectioned involuntarily until his psychoses were treated.
Binro the Heretic
Yeah, but England has the NHS. Here, someone would have to pay to keep him sequestered until he gets the help he needs.

America is fucked up in so many ways.

It's sort of similar here in NL, they do have some sort of basic insurance and government assistance but they are ridiculously slow in utilising it or loathe to. He had his first signs of the messianic rambling and such over 2 years ago, and has been 100% unsupervised and unmedicated since. The only interventions have come from the police when he turns up with the inevitable gigantic handscrawled letters and 'gifts' at my sis-in-law's door, or when he chases her car et al.

Even then, they simply release him after a few hours holding and never seem to refer him on to the proper help he needs.

No see, here in America it's better to let everyone with mental illness be homeless. That's far more humane, so thanks Reagan!

Fuck this country so hard.

My best friend from high school is probably schizophrenic. His father is and it ruined their family's lives. He went into drug addiction for maybe 15 years before coming out of it and getting clean. I made contact with him only to watch his Facebook posts spiral into intense paranoia at all the Satanists hiding everywhere who were taking over the world, and spying on him, and trying to lure him to Hell.

This man was once the smartest, more brilliant person I knew. Now he's a former drug addict whose mind has been burnt out and he sees occult shit everywhere from the supermarket to Disney cartoons.

Xenocide
Some mentally ill people are dangerous, but I hate the stereotype that they're all violent or scary. The truth is usually something closer to O'Hare's situation: good people who just get sick one day.

Probably the kindest, most considerate person I've never known is a woman who would do wonders as a counselor or therapist, because she has incredible empathy and can read people really well without being judgmental. But she can't hold a job and is on government assistance because she suffers from awful delusions on a regular basis, where she thinks her body is deforming or decomposing, which is as terrifying to her as you'd expect.

Thank God she lives in a country with socialized medicine, and she's steadily recovering; if she lived in the US she'd probably be out on the street. How many brilliant people do we throw away in this country?

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest and it's popular reaction against the corruption of the mental health system forced Carter to free the mentally ill. Reagan took this as a hint to cut .5B in mental health funding (in 1982 dollars) from mental health services. That's when they all ended up on the street. But you know, that's freedom for you.

Waugh
you people treat the mentally ill like shit. you're lucky your fears are unfounded

Waugh
well, for most of you at least

Hooker
Who do you feel treated you the worst, Waugh?

Waugh
try again

Oh definitely Xenocide, there are terrible, harmful stereotypes about the mentally ill out there, I do think it is an awful, awful way for people to view people who need help to be compos mentis again but there is definitely room for high-caution as regards those in delusional states with a history of problematic behaviour that adversely affects those around them beyond just simple annoyance/weirding out.

In this case though, our attemps at intervention (contacting his family who refuse to get him help, calling his mutual friends et al) have been at an advisedly long-distance, mainly due to his behaviour being frightening, aggressive and near-constant.

The most harm he's doing is to my sis-in-law's state of mind. She's in a caring profession too so it pulls her in all kind of directions and she's had to seek therapy after a couple of breakdowns over it.

Meanwhile, her ex walks about freely with not one iota of help coming his way any time soon, the main worry is escalation as his labyrinthine delusions have gotten more and more intense, angrier and also his acting out is on a steadily upward trajectory.

We're hoping he gets treated soon.

gah, supposed to be a reply. Far too much Gluhwine!

Xenocide
Oh, I hope you don't think I was accusing you of stereotyping anyone. I was referring more to the way pop culture and gun nuts talk about this issue.

bawbag
Lots of alcohol was involved. It reads much easier today, thanks for clarifying though!

I had no idea. Wow.
