Black Lives Matter should replace Shaun King with Tarantino.

Can't say I entirely agree with his defense of using "nigger" as a stab though, since it was used for comedic effect and not much else in Pulp Fiction, QT's acting tour de force.

Have you seen it? I want to because I'm kind of a projectionist nerd and there's a theatre playing it on 70mm.. it reminds me of when all the ATMs were going to shut down at Y2K because the date was going to roll back to 1900, and only a couple old guys could fix it. The thought of working with that film stock kind of gives me the chills, as well as flashbacks from when I had to build Grindhouse, which tried to emulate 70 on 35. I can't tell you where I might have fucked up and what was intentional so I was basically panicking for a month or however long it was showing.

Without any spoilers is it because it's unlinear and disjointed? I'm not a huge Tarantino fan but he sort of introduced me to that type of storytelling with Pulp Fiction. I was 12 at the time but I thought John Travolta magically came back to life!

Personally, I thought "Hateful" was excellent. The best description of it that I've heard is that it tends to feel more like a stage play than a movie. I don't want to give anything away, but if you are at all interested in it, just go ahead and watch it. I saw a 70mm screening, but I am not at all versed in film enough to really appreciate the difference. It looked great to me.

No spoilers -- I have seen it, and the 70mm looks great. A lot of shots were indoors and you can tell that there was a lot of careful work done on focal depth and lighting needs. There are some incredible shifting focus scenes from foreground to background too. Overall, the frame is detailed and sharp. I wish there had been more outdoor scenes and a wider color palette for same, but you really get a sense of the bleakness and vastness of the landscape. I loved that part of the movie, and it's why I had to see a the film projection.

As for the story and pacing in Hateful Eight -- I have issues with it. The storytelling is easy enough to follow, but the exposition is just too drawn out. I had no issues with the first part of the movie and setting up the characters. It's events that follow over the next 2+ hours. The non-linear parts work fine, though.

I'll just add that I saw a digital projection of Samsara, which was also shot on 70mm, and it still looked great. I'm hoping the 70mm source will carry across formats for this movie too.

More specifically -- the payoffs are weak, there's kind of a story cheat in the last part, and interesting characters are not used enough. I'm sure Tarantino fans will like it, though.

It's hard to notice that much of a difference honestly, like an mp3 vs. vinyl. Like for Death Proof I could tell what was digitally inserted, at least after a few showings where I thought I fucked it up. I might get the chance to see it in 70mm but it's only at one theatre and it interferes with my work schedule and the night I could go it was sold out, so I'm sure I'll enjoy it just fine on digital at one in the afternoon or something.

Wes Anderson does the same thing and I think it works for the both of them because they usually bring in new actors in each film to add to that "cast" they've already developed over time, and it's actually kind of fun.

American Horror Story does roughly the same thing, and that is a lot of fun to watch. Except for Hotel, which I couldn't stand to watch because it fucking sucked.

True on Anderson, good example, I like everything he does. Also thought of Scorsese as well with DeNiro and DiCaprio.

I only started watching the first season of American Horror story on Netflix a few weeks ago. Daring and very intriguing show, I like what I've seen so far.

Basterds was actually my favorite QT movie, because it's the only other one besides Pulp Fiction to reference an Oscar win. Pulp Fiction did it with the briefcase and the end of Basterds breaks the wall and pretty much just says "this is the best movie of the year." I dunno, I like that kind of stuff.

But high fives for Grand Budapest Hotel. I thought I was the only one who didn't like it.

American Horror Story is brilliant. Asylum is the best season in my opinion. But they are all really great at combining horror and history, sociological commentary, and humor.

Except Hotel.

But getting back to Tarantino, it would be interesting to see him get more political as time goes by. He has the intelligence to go places if he really wants to, and if fucking Arnold S can become governor, anyone in Hollywood with half a brain can get into politics.

Oops thought you meant the Anderson movie. :) It is a beautiful movie to watch, like Darjeeling Limited but with more action, but that's the problem for me: Anderson's got it down to a ____ with ____ = ______ madlibs way of coming up with films that QT tends to at least try avoid..

I guess I like that. One of the last times I really had fun at the movies was seeing the new Almodovar movie (at the time) and people were like "oh it's a horror movie.. should I see it?" Fuck ya! Volver's my favorite out of anything he's done but did I want to see another Volver?

Unless I'm missing something that's all QT meant (or literally said) about cops, that they are murderers. It's kind of like what's-his-nuts said, which I actually agree with, something like Not all Muslims are Jihadists, but all Jihadists are Muslims. Can't really argue with that logic. Much like Islamic Extremists, QT called out some fraction of a percentage of all cops, so what's the big deal?
