The Mothership - 2016-01-11

A fine film, but I can't stress this enough: read the book.

Two Jar Slave - 2016-01-11

Is... is that a joke?

I thought you might have meant "Sure [movie about Jesus] is okay, but ha-ha the book is better!"

Turns out The Last Temptation is a real novel. But thanks for reminding me that deodorant is not expensive.

The Mothership - 2016-01-11

Oh, now I see what you meant. No, the New Testament is interesting, but I was in fact referring to the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis.

The question is: which one has a higher Goodreads rating?

The answer is: the Bible does (New International Version), 4.6 stars to 4.12.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2016-01-11

I remember the shitstorm when this came out.

infinite zest - 2016-01-11

Yeah. I've never actually seen the whole thing but I had to work a film fest once where Dafoe was the keynote speaker, and people were outside protesting it. This was like, 2007 or so. And this was after we had Passion of the Christ, which sold out for weeks and weeks.

Nominal - 2016-01-11

That's so fucked up that Last a Temptation is reviled by Christians for daring to suggest Jesus was human, while Passion's pointless, message-less torture fetish was praised to such an extent that Sunday schools were showing it to kids.

It's like something straight out of the ending to The Ruling Class.

infinite zest - 2016-01-11

Yikes. I'd say I find it hard to believe that they actually show it in Sunday School, but then I remembered the Hell Houses and such, which are almost gory enough to warrant a NC17 like Maximum Overdrive originally did. But it's cool because she's in hell with her aborted fetus. Lesson learned.. now go out and play kids :(

garcet71283 - 2016-01-11

Its a shame, because it really is a good Jesus movie.

Nominal - 2016-01-11

My parents' church treated it like a sex ed video. Kids brought home a permission slip for their parents to sign before they watched it.

Discordia - 2016-01-11

My father was a Methodist. He's been dead for 15 years. My mother is still alive and just told me we've just passed the third stage of the apocalypse.

My father loved this movie. He was all into analyzing it and comparing it to scripture.

So yeah. I grew up in the shitstorm of my christian Mom hating it and my christian Dad loving it.

infinite zest - 2016-01-11

My parents are both Episcopalians, and attend an LGBTQ Church with blue-haired priest. But When I asked them if they'd see POtC they said no because of the violence. Yet my dad and I were sitting around watching Commando the other day and Bennet's letting off some steam is much worse than what happened to Jesus, who was pretty much a fictional guy like Bennet anyway.

infinite zest - 2016-01-11

Oops blue haired meaning blue mohawk, and Dad and I laughing at the scene until mom came in and said this is disgusting and made us turn it to the Packers, because there's nothing violent about that.. I love them both but sometimes.. they always tell me when they were in Amsterdam in the 70s the saw Clockwork Orange in the movie theatre; I can't sit through that myself!

MurgatroidMendelbaum - 2016-01-11

The last half-second really contributes heavily to the pathos.

fedex - 2016-01-11

I think you mean the Python

chumbucket - 2016-01-12

Soundtrack >> the actual film

Lurchi - 2016-01-12
