I remember being deeply disappointed in this as a kid because the same scene in the book was so much more horrifying.

In the book, the two kids are sound asleep. The boy thinks his sister gets up in the middle of the night to go use the bathroom. Then he feels water dripping on his face and wonders if it's raining. he opens his eyes and in the dim light, thinks it's snowing because soft pale flakes are drifting to the ground all around him. He hears a loud sickening crunch from somewhere above him and looks up to see a dark shape. He calls out for his sister and the dark shape shifts. It looks down at him with enormous reflective eyes. He realizes the "snow" is the stuffing from his sister's sleeping bag and the "rain" is her blood. The boy screams and the creature, Katahdin, crushes him. His screams wake the parents who are also killed by the Katahdin.

The whole movie was a letdown after the book. It was even more frustrating to find the director had them re-do their original monster, which matched the book more closely, and replace it with the melty-faced grizzly. You do get a glimpse of the original monster right at the end of the movie, though.

I'm going to be honest, that doesn't sound anywhere near as good as this scene.

What a goofy way to go. I'll bet his (her?) funeral had more stifled laughter than Chuckles the Clown's.
