Have not seen it but was considering watching the 2008 French version, as I had heard the 2015 American remake is not good.

This movie is great merely uses the torture porn genre to do something interesting.

The premise is flawed.

The victims aren't going to the edge of death and getting a glimpse of the afterlife. They're going insane from mental and physical torture.

It's a secret society torturing an innocent woman for no good God-damned reason because they're fucking idiots. Any information you get from torture is unreliable.

And of course they're just going to do it again because the head asshole offs herself without telling the rest of the assholes what their victim "saw".

It's pointless suffering to make you feel sad angry and sick. It might as well be "Funny Games" or "The Strangers". Just because it's French doesn't make it classy.

In the end, there was NO fucking reason for it. It's just the usual lazy horror trope of an innocent victim you empathize with having horrible shit done to them so you feel scared and angry for them.

you got your sensibilities shook up, you felt horror and disgust and empathy for the characters, thats kinda the point.. challenging, trangressive, if you were just a little bit more sophisticated you could have accepted the harder stuff as a means to get to the end, which is THOUGHT PROVOKING at the very least, but apparently you would rather just call BULLSHIT because you had your mind made up less than half way through

How exactly is this bullshit movie "thought-provoking"? I hear that from everyone who defends it, but they never really explain what thoughts it provokes or even how it provokes thought. It's like when people call a dead shark suspended in a giant tank of formaldehyde "thought provoking".

It's not thought-provoking. You're just trying to come off as somehow intellectually superior, like you can somehow see the streams of binary code that everything is made of. And you feel smug telling everyone else they're inferior to you because they can't see the boat in the Magic Eye poster.

Being thought-provoking is no big accomplishment. I'm sure man thoughts could be provoked by stepping in a pile of dog shit on the sidewalk.

here's one take that sums up my opinion

The torture in Martyrs was inevitable. You simply cannot refer to it early in the film, suggest that one of your main characters has undergone it and never have any of your key characters endure or suffer to it. The goal of Laugier’s script wouldn’t be met. We would never know the answer to why had Lucie be put through such torture. The reason for all this hard hitting violence would simply be for sick thrills and chills. We wouldn’t know why it was being done and I don’t think anyone would be happy in this type of film to have it simply explained to us in a lengthy monologue. It wasn’t why we were there.

Because it starts so strong yet impersonal and switches to slow, methodical and deeply, deeply personal it will then turn off many viewers. Any time you can distance yourself from the subject of the film the better off you believe you are. Because Laugier’s film made the horror much more personal for me it was inescapable. Certainly anyone familiar with religious history will be more impacted by the answers and the reasons why our characters endure and suffer so much in this film. Hopefully that answer will disgust you as much as it did me.

The entire idea is stolen from a Japanese video game which probably got it from somewhere else. It's not novel or even particularly well executed.

The transgressions of this film are boring.

As much as I think Antichrist is hilarious twaddle in its attempts to goad the viewer into please-god-won't-you-feel-something, it's at least coming from LVT's genuinely fucked up worldview and exhibits genuine craft in its stupid goals.

That "other thing" presumably being the Roman Catholic Church. Which kind of makes sense given the original movie was French. I actually find the idea for the movie interesting, but watching hours of people getting tortured sounds like a remarkably shitty way to spend an afternoon.
