I think part of it is that New Order was never overhyped to death by the art school kids who made up 3/4 of my social circle through most of my 20s.

If you compare discographies, New Order is definitely way better than Joy Division

That art school kids effect is real and can make you hate anything. But I still think we're talking about whether ScarJo's album is better than Bruce Willis'.

I was always pretty happy when I noticed one of those.

Didn't know about the Tom Waits, did know about The Orb.

I was watching TV with my dad, some show about hot rods or something like that, and during the commercials, there was some motor oil company that in two separate but similar commercials used knockoffs of NIN's March of the Pigs and Thrill Kill Kult's After the Flesh. I still regret not writing down details of the commercials - I haven't seen them since.

VW using Little Fluffy Clouds was really disappointing.

There is some dogshit car commercial I've caught a few times recently that does this with The Pixies "Where is My Mind". It is insufferable on many levels!

The reason Waits won the lawsuit was that a company contacted him for a song, then ripped a thinly-disguised version of that song and his style. It was apparently that combination of details that lost them the case. It was more pronounced of a rip-off than the Robin Thicke / Marvin Gaye thing (which I still think was a real loss for artists' rights (even though in that particular case my heart would side with Marvin Gaye)).

Waits did not successfully 'copyright his voice' (or I would have been sued for karaoke like 20 times now).

One of the VW ads really used the song, but there were others that used a bizarre note-for-note copy. They did the same thing with Fluke's "Atom Bomb"...it was some weird re-creation of the song.

Oh god...remember the pie commercial that used EMF? "You're CRUMBELIEVABLE!"
