The accent on the hacker, the outfits, the set all glorious in their awfulness. 5 stars for shaking loose the memories of this I had totally repressed.

Ah cyberpunk, I miss the 90s sometimes.

Over the last year, I have been reading a ton of William Gibson. I read Neuromancer back in high school, but never finished the Sprawl trilogy, so I made a promise to myself to read them all this year, which I did. (then I also read his Burning Chrome stories and a few other minor things) I love Neuromancer, and the other books are pretty good as well, but I'm always astonished at how the entire cyberpunk aesthetic that Gibson, Sterling, and his other contemporaries kinda kickstarted has pretty much never been accurately brought to the screen; just these weird, totally awful copycats of them. I mean, TekWar was such a huge rip-off of the Sprawl that I'm honestly surprised Gibson didn't sue the shit out of them. It's like Neuromancer if it was re-written by 90s advertising firms and boomer-age people who once maybe played an Atari or something. All these "cyber" shows were so uniformly awful.
I'm amazed there has never been an actual movie or something literally BASED on any of the literature that founded this whole movement. A lot of people say The Matrix ruined the chances for a Neuromancer or Count Zero movie, but The Matrix is nothing at all like those books, which are mostly heist thrillers set primarily in the real world.

bawbag - 2016-07-22 Would they sue affable drunk Shatner or his ghostwriter though?
Agreed on the whole Gibsonian aesthetic being woefully misrepresented in basically everything but he -did- write the screenplay for Johnny Mnemonic iirc, so he has to shoulder at least some of the blame.

StanleyPain - 2016-07-22 Gibson did indeed oversee a lot of things about that movie's production, but like so many other things, the film was taken away from the filmmakers by the studio who then completely changed it.
He claims that the version released in Japan is the closest thing to a true director's cut. I've never seen it, personally.

Talk to your kids about TekWar. It's never too early. Talk to them, before it's too late.
