I pronounced it like everyone else at my school including the teachers - "Bear-en-STEEN."

Now that you mention it, I vaguely recall some drama with the Berenstain Bears, maybe two or three years ago? Don't remember the particulars, but I think I encountered a bunch of internet people who were talking about the BerenstEin Bears, and it freaked me out, because I could have sworn it was BerenstAin, and they told me I was wrong.
