Electrical tape seems like a weird choice, you'd think he'd want' a tape that's designed to be permanent (electrical tape is really just for insulation underneath a more permanent tape, nylon or something similar, that actually keeps it in place. Electrical tape on its own is going to start slipping in a couple months, maybe a lot less depending on the weather.
I guess the athletic tape accomplishes the same thing, but it still seems like a weird choice when 1" gaffer's tape would have been immensely more durable for maybe more.
I haven't priced 1" gaffer tape. A large roll of 2" gaffer tape was about at Home Depot last time I was shopping for it, so I just assumed a small roll of 1" would be maybe -, and electrical tape is what, - per roll (at a hardware store).
A large roll of 1" 55 mil gaffer tape is on Amazon right now.
I agree that surgical tape would be the best (that's what I had in mind when I said "nylon tape" really - some kind of nylon fabric tape).
Electrical tape is definitely durable if you wrap it tight like you're supposed to (he did) but the glue turns into more or less liquid in a few months in my experience. Same thing happens to me with duct tape in humid environments sometimes, but it takes a few years.
Anyway, the moral I took from this is that 1" gaffer tape is pretty cheap on Amazon.
I would be more impressed if he could make a plaited whip in 15 minutes.
My favorite part was the annotation about the epithet "cracker" being derived from the cracker on a bullwhip. You don't have to read too deep between the lines to understand how unpleasant the implications of that are.
