Fun fact
This was actually directed by the Taylor Hicks-esque cameraman from Catfish: The TV Show.

Yet, oddly enough, it was still a successful picture because despite making "no money" by Hollywood standards, it made back, like, 400% of its budget.
|
boner - 2016-10-02 Yeah this seems successful enough. Cheaply made, marketed competently (I remember seeing the trailer in cinemas), made some profit.
|
Xenocide - 2016-10-02 When you account for marketing it probably just about broke even.
But that's still a letdown for a summer movie, since studios expect any film released between May and August to make Scrooge Mcduck-sized cash mountains.

"Privileged White Kids*: The Movie"
* (all "kids" in this move are played by people in their mid-twenties)

SolRo - 2016-10-02 pretty sure 'privileged white kids' lasts well into their twenties

Anyone listening to the Worst Idea of All Time podcast?
|
|
Old_Zircon - 2016-10-02 Never heard of the former, haven't heard this episode of the latter.
I was reading some Pitchfork (sigh) article linked on a forum that was making the case yet again that the EDM boom was over. It was notable because of a fantastic timeline of some of the most embarrassing and shameful moments in the big-name EDM world over the past 4 or 5 years, and this was one of them.
|
Grandmaster Funk - 2016-10-03 Worst Idea of All Time is two New Zealand comedians that watch and review the same movie every week for a year. WAYF is the third season. (Following Adam Sandler's Grown-Ups 2 and Sex and the City Two)
Little different vibe than most bad movie podcasts because you get 52+ hours of content about one terrible movie. It's particularly entertaining to finally watch the movie for the first time near the end of the season, as you've developed a warped, secondhand image of the movie.
|
Old_Zircon - 2016-10-03 That actually sounds great.

That guy - 2016-10-03 ^ Gmork is doing this because I don't like Star Wars, so he's 1-starring other people's videos for no reason.

This is the sort of movie you've esssentially seen if you've watched the trailer.

"Record holder for worst opening weekend of all time for a wide release hollywood film."
Oh no, not even close. That honor belongs to The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure.
This movie averaged $758 per theater. Oogieloves averaged $47.
|
Xenocide - 2016-10-02 It's not even the lowest-grossing wide-release movie of 2015. That shit-encrusted crown goes to Jem and the Holograms.
Not a good year for transparent attempts at music-based pandering.

|
Old_Zircon - 2016-10-02 Are you suggesting that a Pitchfork article misrepresented the facts?

Oh my God, were they trying to make some sort of underdog story out of a rich college kid dabbling around with Adobe Premiere?
"DUDE DO YOU WANT TO SPEND YOUR LIFE IN THE VALLEY?"
"WE'VE GOT TO GET OUT OF HERE, THE AVERAGE HOUSEHOLD IS ONLY WORTH $650,000."

Has there ever been a good movie about club music other than Human Traffic and Saturday Night Fever (and both of those are up for debate)?
Can't Stop the Music doesn't count.
|
|
Old_Zircon - 2016-10-03 Haven't seen it so I forgot it existed.
Oh, there was that one "Forever Fever/That's the Way I Like It" in the 90s about the 70s disco scene in Singapore, I remember that being OK.
