I don't get it.

I was out of high school before the post-Columbine era, but when I *was* in HS, by far the people most likely to carry out violence against other students was the "bully class" (sports stars, rich kids with family connections to the school, etc.) than anyone else.

While I appreciate the discussion that came about from events like Columbine about bullying in school, and it's an important topic to be sure, people tend to forget that in many school shootings, *especially* Columbine, the evidence would go on to show that the shooters were, in fact, not victimized or marginalized members of the school, but were actually known to be anti-social violent assholes and bullies in their own right.

Fuck this shit.

Fun fact, I was an antisocial a persecuted child in high school. Later in my life I've found out that I was targeted as the administration of the school for a potential person who could cause gun violence, due to my depression. They blamed all my issues on my mother and put her through hell, while the school delicately tiptoed around the issues and ordered all the teachers "to be nice" to me as this is clearly how to prevent a student from going on a gun rampage.

Due to the school's attempts to "fix" my issues, I've suffered lifelong because of it. Identifying children as potential gun criminals is not the answer, identifying children as mentally suffering and actually helping them with their problems is.

If something that sappy and cloying was happening in front of me day after day, I'd snap too.

This would be evil even *if* the stereotype were true (pro-tip: it's not).

Well, when the alternative is "get rid of guns," who cares about a few misfit kids on the alter of the public safety pageant?

I nearly voted this down in the hopper, but my need to bitch about it won out over my need to see it just disappear.

First of all, fuck their sleight-of-hand-hey-look-at-this-thing-look-at-this-thing-look-at- this-thing-WHAM!-HA!-you-totally-didn't-see-that-other-thing-while -we-made-you-look-at-this-thing-bullshit. Yeah, we saw that thing with the video of the people bouncing the basketball and the person in the gorilla costume, too.

Second of all, this just promotes the bullshit idea that the people carrying out these mass school shootings are the weirdo loner kids who get bullied a lot. This is a narrative that's been pushed for nearly twenty years, ever since the 1999 mass murder spree at Columbine High School perpetrated by Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris. It's based on an out-and-out-lie.

In their frenzy to "explain" how something like this could happen, the media latched onto the idea that Klebold and Harris were victims of bullying out for revenge against their persecutors. Nothing could have been further from the truth, though. They were a pair of psychopaths who did a lot of bullying themselves. Their master plan was to execute a devastating attack that killed hundreds and if they hadn't fucked up the wiring on their bombs, they would have. Their goal wasn't revenge, it was fame and immortality, which they have unfortunately achieved to some degree.

And to see this myth of the bullied kid turning on their tormentors perpetuated by an organization invoking the name of Sandy Hook is particularly disturbing since the mass murder at Sandy Hook Elementary School was carried out by a twenty-year-old man.

The sad fact is most mass shootings take people completely by surprise and the "signs" that the shooter was going to carry them out only appear in hindsight. Regular behavior can look suddenly suspicious after the fact. We don't need to be encouraging school kids to not only treat bullying victims with the scorn and indifference they usually get, but with fear, suspicion and anger on top of it all.

I saw some middle school assholes last year during Halloween season. They were walking home the two of them, in spot on Klebold/Harris garb, Intratec DC-9 and all. Was going to yell at them, but had already learned a lesson from yelling at/confronting minors.
