This was very heartwarming.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-12-14

I love you, wire monkey mom.

That guy - 2016-12-14

Takashi Miike's Her, anybody?

BHWW - 2016-12-14

Thanks to this, a decade from now the buses in Japan will be as empty as the one in this commercial.

fedex - 2016-12-14

Of course Amazon Echo is not enough for Japan, they have to add a full-on anime UI personality layer for it to be a hit.

'tiny waifu' indeed...

blue vein steel - 2016-12-14

Amazon should make a holographic echo like this, but instead of an anime girl, it has something like Hulk Hogan

Maggot Brain - 2016-12-14

"気持ち悪い,"

dairyqueenlatifah - 2016-12-14

At first I figured this was simply a Google Home/Amazon Echo type product with a waifu avatar added.

And then they showed the scenes of him having giddy texting conversations with her....

I wonder how soul crushing it must feel when she starts repeating phrases and the sad reality that you're making doe eyes at a novelty machine smacks you in the face.

fedex - 2016-12-14

Didn't you ever see 'Her'?

Maggot Brain - 2016-12-14

How good can an OS be if it can dump you?

The Mothership - 2016-12-14

My dad called my wife today to see if an Amazon Echo is what I would like for Christmas. She called me at work to tell me this and I about spat out my coffee. All this smart home stuff scares the shit out of me.

Monkey Napoleon - 2016-12-14

It would be a lot scarier if it was smart enough to actually do anything it wasn't explicitly told to do. As it stands, the thing that made all these devices possible was advancements in speech detection. Otherwise, this stuff would have been available 15 years ago.

I was playing around with commercially available speech detection software around 05-ish to automate stuff a la Star Trek. It worked, but speech synthesis was terrible and it had a tendency to garble anything you said farther than a foot away from a carefully calibrated mic.

The fact that it can mostly figure out what you're saying and say things back to you in a non-Daft Punk voice makes it seem way more magical and smarter than it actually is. The worst thing that could realistically happen is it hears your lady friend making sex talk and calls your dad on speakerphone in the middle of a pegging session.

freedoom - 2016-12-14

A friend of mine has an echo. last time i was there i quickly said "alexa, play the song that never ends" followed by "alexa, volume 10" I have successfully weaponized amazon echo.

That guy - 2016-12-14

You could have said 'in the middle of' any number of things.

Old_Zircon - 2016-12-15

Monkey, it's not what it does that's scary, it's that it doubles as a 24/7 surveillance device.

Old_Zircon - 2016-12-15

Incidentally, this week at work we started getting scam calls from a nonexistent breast cancer charity that are using fairly sophisticated voice parsing (considering it's a scam). I always hang up on them pretty quickly but one o my coworkers has stayed on longer and apparently they have an actual conversation tree they follow depending on what you say.

Turns out asking "are you a real person" is enough to get them o start repeating phrases out of context, though, so not THAT sophisticated.

Yet.

That guy - 2016-12-15

haha dead give away

"Can you pass the Turing test?"

". . . SEVEN EEE ZERO FIVE AAA NINE TWO SEE"

"Wellp, everything checks out, here's my money"

Monkey Napoleon - 2016-12-15

Eh, people already carry 24/7 surveillance devices with them everywhere they go that can tell whoever way, waaayyy more than just everything you say.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2016-12-14

But can you look up under its skirt?

fedex - 2016-12-15

maybe, but you can watch it take a shower!

Gmork - 2016-12-14

Anyone who likes this shit is pathetic.

EvilHomer - 2016-12-15

You're awfully judgemental for a transphobic inflation-fetishist.

Robin Kestrel - 2016-12-15

Oh, you didn't just call Dr. Algernop Krieger pathetic, did you?!

Gmork - 2016-12-15

Calling me transphobic does not change the fact that I am not, in fact, transphobic at all.

EvilHomer - 2016-12-15

So what other term would you prefer then, with which to describe your obsessive fear that transexuals might one day trick you into having sex with them?

I am not a Gmorkphobe. If the "T" word upsets you, then I am willing to police my language so as to accommodate your anti-trans safespace.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2016-12-16

Calling someone who doesn't want to fuck a tranny "transphobic" is like calling gay men mysoginists for not wanting to fuck women.

Waugh - 2016-12-16

gay men are misogynists though

EvilHomer - 2016-12-16

Not wanting to have intimate relations with a transexual does not make one transphobic, I agree with you on that. Getting REALLY HUNG UP about not wanting to have intimate relations with a transexual, and believing that there are these great masses of predatory transexuals, lurking in bathrooms and nightclubs, just waiting for a chance to rape staight men? Sure, I'd say that's a little transphobic.

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-12-15

I am vindicated!

Nikon - 2016-12-15

The default model is nice, but I hope they'll have support for different characters as well. They could make a lot of money with expansion packs.

EvilHomer - 2016-12-15

Unless I can fully customize the holographic waifu to my own specifications, I'm not interested.

Nikon - 2016-12-15

Indeed!

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-12-15

What the device really needs is a mod to make a little ChrisChan appear in there instead of the default lure.

Nikon - 2016-12-15

"Oh hai (user's name). I've become this hologram just for youuuuuu. We're gonna have so much fun together now that you and I and I are together. Hmmm."

Ninehells - 2016-12-15

Japan really has cornered the market on soul-crushing isolation as a means to sell manufactured experiences.

Ye gods, I love Capitalism!

somedongus - 2016-12-15

Totally fucking evil. Also I have never understood how the little girl voice is supposed to be appealing. Do they have, you know, adult women in Japan?

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-12-15

Imagine what the corporation sitting on the back end of this thing can do with all the personal shit this poor bastard has whispered into the lure's ear.

fedex - 2016-12-15

Most of the adult women in japan sound like little girls

EvilHomer - 2016-12-16

OR, maybe the little girls in America sound like adult women.

Dang Eurocentrists.
