I suspect there is some truth to this but that it's genetic, much like the opposite situation where involuntary squinting from bright light also makes you sneeze (the genetic origin of that was found in the late 90s, and it affects I think 40% of the population in the US including me) because the brain confuses the nerve impulses that tell it to squint with the ones that tell it to sneeze.
