My bet..
This game will be a lot like 'Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth' But with QTEs and lengthy cutscenes.

Call of Cthuty

Dark Corners was a good Lovecraft game, particularly the beginning. The panicked flight from the mob of locals stands out.

I totally agree that the Lovecraft geek culture gets annoying. But here's the description of the idol from The Call of Cthulhu, and it does describe a bat guy with an octopus head:

"The figure, which was finally passed slowly from man to man for close and careful study, was between seven and eight inches in height, and of exquisitely artistic workmanship. It represented a monster of vaguely anthropoid outline, but with an octopus-like head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind. This thing, which seemed instinct with a fearsome and unnatural malignancy, was of a somewhat bloated corpulence, and squatted evilly on a rectangular block or pedestal covered with undecipherable characters. The tips of the wings touched the back edge of the block, the seat occupied the centre, whilst the long, curved claws of the doubled-up, crouching hind legs gripped the front edge and extended a quarter of the way down toward the bottom of the pedestal. The cephalopod head was bent forward, so that the ends of the facial feelers brushed the backs of huge fore paws which clasped the croucher’s elevated knees. The aspect of the whole was abnormally life-like, and the more subtly fearful because its source was so totally unknown."

Ah yes but that is just an idol, a figurine, made by humans. Is that from the 'call of cthulu' story? (I honestly forget which story is which at this point + the details.) But the figure could just be how cthulu manifested in the scupltors mind, etc. Generally Lovecrafts stuff is so effective cus the threat is so vague, not some silly monster but, almost existential horror itself, like in alien, they dont show the alien till late in the movie and only in glimpses of its weird / hard to work out anatomy.

HPL's own drawing of Cthulhu is pretty silly and I kinda feel it was good he was left behind in favor of more vague or shape-shifting old ones such as of Nyarlathotep or Yog-Sothoth.

Purple Cat, I like your interpretation there. I also think things are scarier when they're less-dedined, and from the little Lovecraft I've read that does seem to be a part of it.
