I kind of liked it. The actor who played Paul was good.

This aired on german television once in the late 90s split in 3 or 4 parts. I remember they promoted the shit out of it with behind the scenes segments in between the parts.

I was amazed that the desert backgrounds were just huge pictures, as I kid I thought they looked so good they must have filmed in the actual Sahara or something.

Now I can't get over how shit they look, I wonder if it has something to do with seeing it on a CRT TV.

I loved the hell out of Ian McNiece playing Baron Harkonnen. The actress playing Jessica was also good. The CGI spaceship/fetus Space Guild is a little dated. Mainly I just loved the look of the sets and the costume design. It was a departure from the original in a kind of cool way in that it followed the book a little more closely. The original was more engaging, but the newer miniseries did explain some things the first one didn't.

I kind of want to see an adaptation of God Emperor now just to see how awful it would be.

Beefing up the Emperor's daughter helps the flow of the movie a lot but I still prefer the S&M look of the Lynch movie.

I liked this a lot when I first saw it. The costumes were overdone to the point of distraction in a lot of scenes, though.

While I actually liked the follow-up series, Children of Dune (which compresses the books Dune Messiah and Children of Dune into a 4 hour thing), this was garbage. The intentional attempts to distance it from the Lynch version just make it so much worse, the worst offender of which is the variety of intentional mispronunciations of the many of the terms and names in the books which I will never understand.

Lesser known fact: the film was actually to be a kind of a demo project for a special kind of 30fps high def digital format being developed by legendary cinematographer Vittorio Storario, but I was confused why, if that was the case, the entire thing was made with so much greenscreen and garbage sets on obvious soundstages. At the time when this was made, it was a pretty radical experiment (digital film was still very new and widely disliked by many cinematographer), but I don't think it really did much of anything to forward the development of digital as a realistic format.

All I can see is a Star Trek:TNG production of Dune

I kind of liked this series when it released, but looking again...nah.

Closer to the story, but farther from inspiration.

This version was not nearly as good as Lynch's for the primary reason that there was no pugs to be found in this version.
