Exactly. Conservatives have been "protesting" in this manner for years. I figure this is the way to finally bring about an end to open carry. Once liberals and minorities start doing it the NRA will be calling for it's end just like they did when the Black Panthers open carried.

Gun control, until just recently, has, in America, been a long history of making up laws to keep minorities (black people, mostly) from having guns for self-defense. The whole "zip guns" ban was a very thinly veiled targeted ban against the kind of economical handguns poor black people could afford for self-defense.

It's kind of been subsumed by people pissed off about all the mass shootings and other non-crime-byproduct shooting numbers in the last couple of decades or so, but it's important for people that actually support gun control to be aware of its history, and realize that it CAN be used as a very targeted weapon (though I doubt "white men" will ever be one of those groups, despite what the NRA's target audience might think).

If minorities and allies start "protesting" the way conservatives have, I absolutely think that there'd start to be some surprising support for gun control amongst the people that previously considered it a stance worthy of execution.

Black people own guns, are allowed to buy them, and one even sits on the board of the NRA.

Any zip gun ban is really about people being scared shitless over firearms being fundamentally pretty simple devices that anyone of any income level has access to... outside normal channels of registration and tracking.*

*This is the bit that freaks people out, and is impossible to prevent. The ban is just more political theater.

The real racism comes into play a while from now when it's just another law selectively applied to poor minorities in order to fluff up nothing charges into serious felonies.

Trust me. The only enemy currently recognized by the Republican party is the Democrat. The party of Reagan is now openly embracing the former head of the KGB in order to undercut the Dem's. I'd always thought the Dems and Obama should've tried, at least once or twice, the kind of incredibly transparent reverse psychology that'd work on children to get at least one or two of their goals passed by the Republicans. Just say 'Oh, I sure do hate socialized medicine! Only a crazy out of control Christian bigot could ever want to cover everyone, it's important that we be able to pick and choose who gets coverage, so that we can keep it from white straight men!' in a big speech with obvious speech patterns, then see what happens.

What you are describing actually happened in the 90's via Bill Clinton. The effect was to push them further to the right, until today when to be a good patriotic republican means believing in the complete destruction of the federal government. We've got armed insurgents out here that are, in most respects, indistinguishable in aim to Al Queda or ISIS. Yet they believe themselves to be patriots, and in some instances have actually gone to battle and sustained serious bodily injury fighting for the very thing they fervently wish to destroy. It beggars the imagination.
