I know it's a controversial opinion but I never got the hype about this guy and I'm completely amused by all of the fan angst that he SOLD OUT by doing a Nike ad or something this year, because who could imagine a successful Brooklyn art hipster would ever do such a thing?

I mean, he's not bad but I haven't heard anything particularly groundbreaking or surprising from him. Much like Animal Collective. Pleasant, unchallenging, middlebrow experimentalism.

This sounds like a Trent Reznor B side from 1995.

Yeah maybe it's the Nike thing but I feel the same way about LCD Soundsystem. To be fair OPN's video wasn't really for Nike I don't think, it was just Val Kilmer looking at himself in a mirror in a hotel room or something wearing a tracksuit. But of course the Nike Swoosh is very visible.. it's kinda like the song 'Adidas' by Killer Mike to me. It's a song about him doing his thing, but you know Adidas stock went up when the song got big, and I think they used it in their ad campaign anyway.

As for the music, I had kinda forgotten about him after Stick Drama and the amazing LARP video; he was one of those Warp artists to me that might be OK for a song or two, like Hudson Mohawke or Squarepusher's little bro or even Vincent Gallo, who are happy doing producing, videogames and film and stuff, but definitely wouldn't remain on my radar the way AFX Autechre and Plaid are. But I've been re-listening to Replica a lot recently because my Blanck Mass radio station seems to go to this guy by default when creating a station. It's much more ambient than the dancefloor stuff, and speaking of Trent, he opened for Nine Inch Nails doing pretty much stuff like that, with Reznor performing as well, and it did sound about like this, even though I still can't imagine Pop making the particular art jump into industrial the way Bowie or even Byrne and Eno did, even though they're basically of the same musical lineage.

Then again besides Blanck Mass's new album World Eater, I haven't heard much that I like coming out of the (ugh) IDM scene, and I don't even like his main group Fuck Buttons that much. But I'm always taking suggestions :)

World Eater is fantastic.
OPN has had more memorable videos than music.

Yeah, OPN is fine musically I just don't get why hipsters have been soiling their drawers over him for years when people have been doing the same kind of stuff, often better, for literally decades (technology allowing).

Feel kind of the same way about Wolf Eyes.

Last time I heard them a bunch of people I knew were losing it over the latest album and I heard it and it kind of sounded like a bland, humorless version of DJ Pica Pica Pica (a Yamantaka Eye side project from like 14 years earlier).

Tobe fair, I'm listening to Dj Pica Pica Pica right now for the first time in a decade and I overestimated its similarity and underestimated its superiority. It is really good.

And yeah, IZ, Ceephax Acid Crew is fantastic.

You should check out the recent Roy of the Ravers stuff if you like Ceephax.

I've been really enjoying the recent Jori Hulkkonen stuff since he got onto kind of a lo-fi Eastern Bloc synthpop kick recently. I posted a track on here a few weeks ago but I don't think anyone noticed.

Cool thanks for the suggestions! Big take back for me too, after I wrote this I decided to see if Ceefax had done anything new and I've been listening to Cro Magnox pretty much on repeat since then.
