Haven't we got a whole slew of great paint apps on our phones these days?

Cena_mark - 2017-07-25

Yes, but Microsoft Paint is beloved by many. It has a unique look. In fact due to fan outcry it has been saved.

Most paint programs on mobile can't do a fraction of what Paint does unless you pay for the "expansions" to get tools which have been standard in image software for fucking decades. But why anyone uses mainstream image programs these days blows my mind. With the amount of high quality freeware/donationware out there that outclasses Photoshop by leaps and bounds, I am astonished that people seriously, unironically pay $200-300 for this shit software and then another $20+ PER MONTH for their BS "cloud services" and access to extended features that are free in everything else.

counterpoint: the UI in Gimp and all open source software is utter shit

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2017-07-25

adobe are the shit-ui *masters* .. You are just used to it.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2017-07-25

I've never encountered anyone who convinced me that they were experienced enough in both GIMP and Photoshop to judge intelligently between the two. I've been using GIMP for about 10 years, and it works fine for me. The interface improved vastly after GIMP 2.8 introduced the single window mode.

GIMP is great for editing images, and there's a free plugin for scaling or transforming images in bulk, but when you're actually drawing, nothing beats drawing directly on a tablet or phone.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2017-07-25

The Android expansions are generally two or three dollars , and they follow you from device to device.

Old_Zircon - 2017-07-25

I'm still a fan of Windows 3.1 Paintbrush, myself. Probably because my first paint program was ZSoft Paintbrush for DOS and that was a stripped down, licensed version. Anyway, Windows 3.1 Paintbrush was the last one that let you paint with dither patterns for doing sweet, 16 color EGA graphics.

That's why I use free Photoshop CS2.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2017-07-25

I've been using Linux for about 10 years. I can tell you why I like it, but if I ever start talking about how its better than Windows, and about how Windows is shit, go ahead and Ignore me, I haven't even seen Windows since XP. Its like people who say Linux is bad because you have to compile all your software. This may be true about Slackware from 2000. I use Ubuntu, and I think I may have forgotten how to compile.

Monkey Napoleon - 2017-07-25

GiMP sucks because the layering scheme Adobe came up with is basically the best thing ever and GiMP doesn't have it.

Although I don't have any experience, I would be extremely skeptical of a consumer tablet not designed explicitly for drawing having a digitizer that was good enough for actual work. Additionally, the garbage OS of the tablet hampers any real convenience or proper workflow.

It will be a long long time before anything on android or iOS is good for much besides quick sketches.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2017-07-25

>>>Additionally, the garbage OS of the tablet hampers any real convenience or proper workflow.

Okay, but isn't the tablet convenient BECAUSE IT'S A TABLET?

Monkey Napoleon - 2017-07-25

I didn't say they weren't convenient, I said their convenience was hampered.

We're not quite in the future technotopia yet.

Nominal - 2017-07-26

Nope. I tried Gimp at the exact same time I learned Photoshop for the first time.

Gimp is shit.

Oscar Wildcat - 2017-07-25

Reports of Paint's death are a little premature.

Monkey Napoleon - 2017-07-25

Yeah, and knowing microsoft... paint will still be accessible in whatever build of windows we're on in 2030 buried somewhere in the system folder.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2017-07-25

It's saved!

reifiedandrefined - 2017-07-25

thirty two years old. older than the internet. older than some of my coworkers. still use it for pasting printscreens.

Anaxagoras - 2017-07-25

MS Paint, click on Start, Paint here.

Anaxagoras - 2017-07-25

Dagnabbit. I forgot that special characters get eaten. Well then. I'll leave my original post without further explanation, as a monument to my incompetence.

infinite zest - 2017-07-26

Did anybody mourn the loss of Space Cadet Pinball? I mean, it's still available just like Paint and didn't appear until '95, but that'd be about as major as getting rid of Minesweeper and Solitaire I'd reckon

infinite zest - 2017-07-26

WELL TARNATION they stopped Minesweeper after 8 and Solitaire after 7, like systematically targeting those things you do at work when the internet goes down
