I like del Toro for his ability to craft worlds I want to visit.

Indeed

Monkey Napoleon - 2017-09-07

So is this the origin story of Abe, or what?

Gaseous_Planet - 2017-09-07

It's obviously Abe, unless Del Toro has a thing with fish people liking eggs for some reason. What's strange is that there is no mention of Mike Mignola or Hellboy or anything related to any press release involving this movie. Only fan theories at this point.

SolRo - 2017-09-07

Doesn't look like Abe though.

Do all fish people look the same to you? Racist.

She's referred to as "the princess" in the first ten seconds. The girl from Pan's Labyrinth was also referred to as a Princess. Also, Del Toro originally planned for a war trilogy that was tied to the underground, Devil's Backbone being the first and Pan's Labyrinth being the second. It'd make sense if this was in that loosely-defined universe, especially since Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth didn't share too much in common on the surface save for the reality of the war itself. Or it's a helper-bot for the Kaiju. Who's to say?

Binro the Heretic - 2017-09-08

I don't think it's supposed to be Abe, but maybe one of his people?

chumbucket - 2017-09-08

It's supposed to make us think all of this stuff is connected but it's not, just familiar.

Gaseous_Planet - 2017-09-08

In the comics, Abe's life cycle is *complicated*, but Del Toro ignored a lot of Abe's character traits overall, so by that standard it would make sense if he rewrote the origin story. What would be stranger is that he would be inspired by Mignola's character and then refuse to acknowledge that he was.

I remember hearing years ago that they were working on a prequel starring Abe.

Since I believe they no longer have the rights to Hellboy (there is a reboot in the works with a different studio/director) they probably just ran with what they had, changed enough details to avoid a lawsuit, and made this.

We can let it live in our head-canon as the prequel we will never get.

>It's obviously Abe, unless Del Toro has a thing with fish people liking eggs for some reason.

Well now we know the answer to that mystery.

I hope this does better than Crimson Peak.

I feel like I'm the only one who liked that movie.

Raggamuffin - 2017-09-08

I liked it, but I think the at-times cartoony CGI limited it a lot.

memedumpster - 2017-09-08

The cgi was just a metaphor.

I loved Crimson Peak, it hit all the gothic horror pleasure buttons in my brain. It reminded me of the late movie shows Memories of Monsters and Mysteries at Midnight from my childhood.

cognitivedissonance - 2017-09-08

He's Tim Burton's best films and Terry Gillian's worst films, smooshed into a consistently unimpressive mediocrity that has never really clicked with me. But hey, you guys have fun.

The Mothership - 2017-09-09

Trailer gave away the whole movie, but I would still see it. Looks good.
