Y'all know Jurassic park is not likely cus.. the half life of DNA is roughly 521 years [1]. The sample was 99 million years old, so you could expect roughly 3.33347 × 10^-57200 [2] percent of the DNA to be left. And considering humans have about 7 billion base pairs [3], you could reasonably expect no real recoverable information to remain.

Still awesome tho obvs

this isn't a dupe, but isn't this story at least a year old? Still super neat.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2017-12-10

Yeah, someone just posted about it on hackernews and I'd not heard about it, along with a bunch of others it seems.. It was 2017 so maybe it got overshadowed by some celeb dying.

Chancho - 2017-12-10

Thanks for clearing that up. I was just about to post that we will soon have dinosaurs as pets.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2017-12-10

@Chancho.. All the info in my parent comment is just copied from someone diligents hackernews comment.
Until reading that and other comments I never knew that DNA would decay so quickly, I also never really considered that all molecules will fall apart eventually, though I am familiar with the 'heat death of the universe' concept and radioactive decay.

I wonder if the DNA was kept at absolute 0 would it last a lot longer? Presumably the 'jiggle' of heat plays a role in its decay.

We can still have 'Mammoth Paaaaaaark' though!

Real Jurassic Park confirmed, thanks.

Derple Cat, you know they can just fix the gaps with frog DNA.

Gypsy_Dildo_Factory - 2017-12-10

First time I saw dinosaur feathers... What's with the narrator? Is she a computer? Or a not primary english speaker going by a computer's reading of lines?

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2017-12-10

Pretty sure thats a computer... Also I don remember seeing ure handle here b4.. Just want to say kudos.. kudos...

Gypsy_Dildo_Factory - 2017-12-10

^_^ thxz it comes from a dream I had

Gypsy_Dildo_Factory - 2017-12-10

^^^^ d'oh! I meant to reply to Mr. Purple Cat, Esq.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2017-12-10

That is actually the typical random shit one gets in dreams.

I seem to like the '3 random words' handles. eg 'Sexy Duck Cop'

Mine does not follow that format but my friend came up with it when we were like 10 and hacking ridiculous names into the intro of Sid meier's civilization by altering a plaintext file.

Gypsy_Dildo_Factory - 2017-12-10

It's also partly from Repo Man:

Then I had a dream a few years ago with a stationary dildo factory and warehouse on an Air Force base and someone flew a plane through it as I was explaining everything a friend on the phone.

memedumpster - 2017-12-12

That was awesome!

Prehistoric ant got no representation.
