Chicken the Did - 2017-12-29
Oh! I got a lantern gifted to me by my mom when I cleaned out her place. I plugged it into the mains to charge it but what I didn't realize was it ran on AA's. I thought maybe it had some lith ion thing going on. But anyways eventually it just stopped working. When I went to throw it in the bin the battery cover came off. That's when I saw that the thing ran on AA's... And they all had exploded. Apparently when you plugged this thing in somehow a charge was leaking back to the batteries. Which of course can not be charged and blow up when you try to.

MacGyver Style Bomb - 2017-12-29 I've seen that happen with an older style wireless mouse. It had a base for charging the rechargeable AA batteries that it came with... but someone replaced them with alkaline batteries. Yeah, it was fucked.

I was actually gifted the opposite: A wood-burning camp stove that can charge your devices via usb. I'm not sure if how I feel about it.

Chicken the Did - 2017-12-29 That's pretty neat, dude. All I got was a 25$ movie gift card for one chain (Regal) and about 20 bucks for popcorn. :(

Mister Yuck - 2017-12-29 I've heard from a few folks those things are dope. Not so much for the USB charging-my philosophy is if you need to charge your phone while camping you're doing it wrong-but just as a stove. The thing runs a fan so it gets real hot off easily found kindling. You don't need to bring cooking fuel and it's efficient enough to keep running just on deadfall. If you camp often keep it.

yogarfield - 2017-12-30 Same here. The missus works in forestry, and with the places we go it wouldn't matter if your phone was charged or not. Then I read it had a fan and I'm curious to see it in action. I was going to sell it to buy fancy champagne for NYE, but now I'm definitely keeping it. Thanks Ma and Pa, err.. Santa.
Any of your folks have tips on it?

bawbag - 2017-12-30 Is it not terribly slow to charge + a lot of feeding into the rocket stove?
|
yogarfield - 2018-01-04 @bawbag It has a pretty huge battery bank so you can precharge and it works to keep itself going. Tried it out the other day and was pleasantly impressed.

5 for Big Clive, genuinely one of the nicest people you could run into on the IoM.
