John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-02-09

God, I am really getting tired of men I've admired for years turning out to be motherfuckers.

yogarfield - 2018-02-09

..you admired Tarantino? Curious as to why, he's always been a bit of a hack.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-02-09

Is that you, Evil Homer?

Monkey Napoleon - 2018-02-09

A hack and a bit of a creeper. It's not even a secret.

yogarfield - 2018-02-09

Did I provide a 3-page rant on the benefits of ponies? Nah, but Tarantino was severely overrated even before this new revelation.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-02-09

Of course it's not. Hipster types have been dissing Tarantino for at least as long as I've been coming here. The first time I encountered it was someone criticizing me for the Tarentino reference in my user name. That was around 2006. Whoever it was also mentioned the Simpsons.

The creeper stuff is a little more recent. It's a vague criticism, but I certainly do get it.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-02-09

What you did was give up a very nonspecific opinion, and give me an open-ended essay question. Homer's thing wasn't really ponies, it was homework assignments.

Old_Zircon - 2018-02-09

Reservoir Dogs was a fun summer movie.

Xenocide - 2018-02-09

JHM is actually a sentient foot, and he just wanted to return the admiration Tarentino has given him over the years.

No, but seriously, Tarentino is overrated in general, but he HAS made some great films, and Kill Bill is one of them. So I can certainly see admiring him as a filmmaker, though personally I'm not at all surprised to learn he's a complete asshole. Well, more of an asshole.

His other two great movies are Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs. All the others run the gamut from pretty good (Inglorious Basterds) to completely forgettable (Death Proof, which you forgot about.)

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-02-10

Thank you for calling me "sentient".

yogarfield - 2018-02-10

Pulp Fiction is a good flick. The rest of his opus are glorified versions of the types of films he was originally parodying. Also not being a hater, but you should spell his name right if you like him so much.

Anaxagoras - 2018-02-10

Tarantino's recent stuff has been top notch. Hateful Eight, Inglorious Basterds, and Django Unchained were all excellent.

Which makes his apparent asshol-itude even worse. God damnit.

memedumpster - 2018-02-09

Tarantino is now on the Mel Gibson List. I don't care how good his movies are, I will never again pay to see one. The Roman Polanski rape apologist shit is the goddamned worst, as well as this.

His will be the fourth Star Trek movie I didn't see in a theater, and the first I wont see by choice.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-02-09

I thought that Meryl Streep was unfairly criticized for applauding when Polanski got an Oscar, but what Tarentino is supposed to have said about Polanski is inexcusable. I wouldn't boycott his films, but he deserves all the shit he's getting over it, and it might be good for him if he was forced to make actual low budget films.

BHWW - 2018-02-09

That car shot did not require Uma Thurman, she's only seen from behind, you get a blonde stunt driver; that was a really foolish, half-baked risk for Tarantino to take with his lead.

He's just a moron who thought it was easier to make her do the shot because in his obnoxious film-nerd, weed-clogged brain she was his "muse". Tartanino probably was just following his film nerd nature and quasi-spergily believed that having Thurman in that scene was the only way to make it "perfect" and "authentic".

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-02-09

Honestly, I can see why a stunt double would be a problem because it's a sustained shot. The audience would have a long time to notice. But he shouldn't make an actor do something that didn't feel safe. He should have found another way, or at least he should make sure the car was safe. It could have been done digitally; I'm sure he had the budget for that.

Cena_mark - 2018-02-09

Still it's the back of her head. Get a pro driver for that.

memedumpster - 2018-02-09

Also, goddamn, DO NOT READ THE YOUTUBE COMMENTS.

kingofthenothing - 2018-02-10

I went and did anyway.

"Women drivers."

"In Saudi Arabia, this wouldn't have happened."

"Try not to aim for the tree next time."

"Women can't do anything right."

"WOMEN KNOW YOUR LIMITS !!!!"

"Just another typical Hollyweird libiot snowflake exaggerating and milking the story for their own ego and pocketbook. "

"I've done that and not even spilled my beer, rub some dirt on it baby and get back to work. "

"learn to drive you untalented bicth" (my note: their typo, not mine)

"A woman literally can't even drive a car down a perfectly fine road, and a man gets blamed for her accident. "

I mean, thankfully the other half of the comments are decent people who feel bad for her, but CHRIST these are depressing.

Caminante Nocturno - 2018-02-10

Those Youtube comments are almost as bad as Uma's driving.

betamaxed - 2018-02-09

Tarantino is the kind of garbage white man who thinks it's okay to say "nigger" in front of black people because he believes he's hip enough to do so and totally not a racist.

Every shitbag Gen X-er that was responsible for giving Tarantino patronage should be kicked in the balls, even if that means I'm one of the ones who gets a kick for enjoying Kill Bill back in '03.

Fuck Tarantino. I hope one day he himself dies in a brutal car crash.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2018-02-09

I like how your name is "betamaxed".

betamaxed - 2018-02-09

I'm glad that you too are a fan of Sony's magnetic tape recording technology used for capturing video that was superior to VHS.

15th - 2018-02-09

He should die because a grown women made a risky choice. She had no leverage as an A list actress. Her baby-woman brain couldn't have known this could happen.

Tarrintino sucks and you're retarded.

Monkey Napoleon - 2018-02-09

It's very hard for me to feel sympathy for things like this given what these people get paid.

If this exact thing happened to you somehow for your job, you wouldn't even be able to sue them for the amount of money she made for this film. You're not even going to earn that amount of money over the course of your entire life... Even if your job is really important, like an EMT or a firefighter or a social worker who helps kids.

If I'm being honest, why would anyone give a fuck about this? It's not good, obviously, but it's one of these things people blow out of proportion because of our weird celebrity obsessed society. Show me an average person who was maimed beyond the ability to ever work again while they were doing a job just to barely squeak by AND THEN they had to rely on the government to pay their medical and rehabilitation expenses. Then I would feel sympathy. What the fuck even is this?

il fiore bel - 2018-02-09

The right to not be killed and maimed doesn't end just because you make over 50K.

betamaxed - 2018-02-09

MN, the reason why people are expressing their opinions is because they're doing so based on the evidence presented in the video on the page.

As someone who has posted many a workplace accident videos, while I think Tarantino is a garbage person I don't think he's anywhere near the scale of evil as say the corporate executives of British Petroleum (BP). Those aren't people I believe who should die in a car crash, those are people I believe who should spend every waking moment of their lives in physical and psychological agony.

People getting pissed off by this video or the story surrounding it doesn't mean that they wouldn't be equally or even more pissed off by the scenario you're describing. If you're arguing that one deserves more consideration in the greater public consciousness than a workplace incident involving a millionaire in a 2002 film production then I'm 100% in agreement.

Monkey Napoleon - 2018-02-09

That's not a thing I said or implied.

I said it was bad. What bugs me is that this is news and those other things generally aren't. Other things worse than this in the film industry are still seen as kind of badass legends if the output is something people revere.

Monkey Napoleon - 2018-02-09

That was in response to ill fore, and yeah... that IS what I'm saying beta.

I just can't get worked up about little boo boos of the fabulously wealthy.

memedumpster - 2018-02-09

What are those other things, Nap, that you could be using this space to talk about in addition to rather than narc'ing out for a rage dope hit and victim shaming?

You fucks need some therapy, you come off as aliens from Cluster B more often than you don't these days.

Monkey Napoleon - 2018-02-09

I guess a person who just doesn't give a fuck about celebrity worship when so many people live in abject poverty WOULD look like an alien to a dipshit who sees these things as important somehow.

Actually, you're right. You've converted me. The plight of the worker is bullshit and now I'm all about being outraged at how we got maybe one less Uma Thurman movie and she missed out on one $12M paycheck. Man, that's soooo fucked up somebody had to suffer a little bit for their obscene wealth. I just didn't know what suffering was until I got paid eight digits.

Cena_mark - 2018-02-09

It means that if a film star can be pressured into dangerous work conditions so can anyone else. Her struggle is the struggle of all workers.

Old_Zircon - 2018-02-09

Even in movie terms this is nothing compared to the demands made by, say, Werner Herzog, or what they did to Linda Blair to get some of the effects shots in the Exorcist (one of which resulted in a permanent, life long back injury).

Not saying this isn't shitty treatment of a worker on a certain level, but OTOH Uma is SAG and was well within her power to walk. This isn't like some direct to video B movie in the 80s where the actors are essentially captive because they're at points in their careers where every role they get could be their last if they don't play ball.

Basically this doesn't change my opinions of Tarantino, which are that he's the Brian DePalma of his generation - a competent but not particularly original filmmaker who has occasional moments of brilliance hidden in a sea of middlebrow blandness, and is probably a it of a creeper but he's an A list director so that goes without saying. Directing (and acting, for that matter, or at least method acting) are kind of inherently the domain of creepers. I'm sure hes nowhere near as gross as Hitchcock.

Kill Bill was easily the worst Tarantino movie I've seen, by a mile.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-02-09

I happened to discover this clip after watching KILL BILL, VOLUME TWO last night, and I really enjoyed her performance. Also, my mother suffered from chronic pain her whole life because of a very similar accident suffered in a Volkswagon Beetle, when the seat came unattached due to a design flaw that I believe became the basis for a mass recall not long afterward. So maybe I feel a little extra sympathy for Uma. That's just human.

Let's take Uma Thurman out of this for a moment. Let's talk about actors who were actually killed. Jeffrey Hunter, who played Christopher Pike in the original STAR TREK, was killed when explosive charges were improperly located. Brandon Lee died rather famously before he became famous, while shooting THE CROW. Vic Morrow died, ALONG WITH TWO CHILDREN, during the shooting of TWILIGHT ZONE, THE MOVIE.

These are all actors I can name. How many extras have been killed? These was something else that happened at a railroad bridge. Let's see if I can find that.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-02-09

The question is: would Tarantino have forced Clooney to do that? Would he have forced Samuel L. Jackson to do that? Would a male star's concerns be more respected? If not, that makes this part and parcel of all that systematic abuse of actresses up and down the food chain that we've been learning about.

I don't know the answer. But for sure, that's the question.

M-DEEM - 2018-02-09

Nobody forced her

dairyqueenlatifah - 2018-02-09

My heart is breaking for her. I mean, she only got paid 24 million dollars for this.

Monkey Napoleon - 2018-02-09

Hey man, fuck you! Her representation gets 15%, and then she has to pay her own travel expenses (in cases when she's not travelling for promotional reasons), and then she has to pay taxes! She probably only pulled like $15M, and that's really not fair!

Monkey Napoleon - 2018-02-09

Just because you or I would do this intentionally, twice, for this amount of money doesn't mean we shouldn't have feelings about this.

Monkey Napoleon - 2018-02-09

You're all looking at it the wrong way. This is karma for Batman & Robin.

Oscar Wildcat - 2018-02-09

If only J.G. Ballard had lived to see the day...

M-DEEM - 2018-02-09

How did that conversation go?
"Hey I want you to drive this unsafe old convertible really fast through the forrest.'"
"No thanks, get me a stunt double"
"No"
"Oh ok guess I'll do it then"

He says no, tell him to eat a dick. What's he gonna do, write you out of the movie?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-02-09

Honestly, I think that he could make her life more difficult if he wanted to. You sort of have a point, but consider what it must be like to be, in all probability, virtually the only woman on the lot. You're going to feel judged.

That doesn't get her completely off the hook, but telling this story will make it easier for the next actor to tell the director to eat a dick. I'm sure that's one reason why she's telling it.

M-DEEM - 2018-02-09

Make her life more difficult than what? A few mil less? I don't buy the damsel in distress stuff, she's at the top of the A-list. She can tell anyone she wants to go tug taffy. I'm sure no movie star but I can't think of a job I've had (except for off the books construction) where I couldn't say no to something risky. Employers don't like lawsuits. Maybe acting is different.

Alternate theory "Ok guess I'll go do this dumb shit it'll sound good on Letterman later"

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-02-10

>>>Employers don't like lawsuits. Maybe acting is different.

Well, NOBODY likes lawsuits. But if it comes right down to it, if she doesn't do what he, she could be the one who violates the contract, right? That would make HER subject to litigation. i would think that her contract is pretty ironclad since the whole thing collapses without her.

I'm just speculating. I don't know. But I'm pretty sure you don't know, either.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-02-10

>>> I don't buy the damsel in distress stuff,

Oh, I get it now! You're a dick! Sorry it took me so long to figure it out, it's not like you were keeping it secret.

M-DEEM - 2018-02-10

No worries maybe by the time you're 70 you'll figure out that you can't always pass your shitty decisions off on others

sasazuka - 2018-02-09

Wasn't the problem with the car that it was a Karmann-Ghia that was originally an automatic but was dodgily converted to manual because Tarantino thought manual "looks cool"?

I'm on team Thurman here, while accidents happen, she shouldn't have been forced by Tarantino to drive that poorly-customized car at 40mph just to get the wind effect in the hair.

That's one of those shots that was converted to black-and-white in post-production, if I remember correctly. It would have been just as effective to shoot it using old school special effects: static with the street projected onto a screen and a fan blowing her hair, without risking the life of your main actress. (Shooting all the dangerous car footage for real in Death Proof was a different story as, unlike Uma Thurman, Zoë Bell is a professional stuntwoman in addition to being an actress.)

TheyUsedDarkForces - 2018-02-10

It was converted from manual to "automatic", so it was the other way around. I just don't really know what they mean by that...

Warning: car pedantry ahead

Thing is, there was never a fully automatic Ghia. There was, however, a semi-manual autostick model (torque converter instead of a clutch), and it was available from the factory in the later cars (of which this is one). VW had an automatic in the Squareback, but I have no idea how easy it is to get one to work in the Ghia. So, it sounds like they had to hack the car up a little to get whatever transaxle they used to fit, hence the wonky seat. Either way, no matter how difficult it is to complete that project properly, there's no excuse on a movie with this big a budget.

Also, it seems like all of this could have been avoided with a few practice runs at lower speeds. Obviously, RWD, rear engined cars handle differently because of the rear weight bias, especially if it's on a dirt road. Tarantino didn't need her hauling ass and sliding around corners, they just wanted her to carry enough speed for her hair to blow around.

Anyways, it sure seems to me that they could have mitigated almost all of the risk just by bolting her seat down and allowing her time to get familiar with the car and the road. These things handle poorly and it doesn't sound like she's a very good driver, so why rush it and take that risk? Seems pretty dumb...

I'm sorry Uma got hurt, especially since it seems like it was totally avoidable. And for what it's worth, I generally like Tarantino's movies, and I enjoyed Kill Bill when it came out.

boner - 2018-02-10

What no commentary track?

Caminante Nocturno - 2018-02-10

Wow, it looks so real.

poopy - 2018-02-10

lol

StanleyPain - 2018-02-10

You guys remember when it was YouTube that had the shitty comments from shit people?

M-DEEM - 2018-02-11

No

That guy - 2018-02-12

There are a couple of parts missing in this discussion, but I'm not sure who to reply to:

1) People die and get seriously injured on set. Everyone in the business knows this.

2) The director is a social leader on set, even in areas where he's not the boss. Safety is EXACTLY one of those areas where a director can lead negatively or positively even though it is not-at-all in his job description.
Directors are sometimes capable of using social capital to get people to push past safety considerations because of the typical very deep commitment to teamwork on set. So a director is VERY culpable for this kind of shit EVEN THOUGH the individuals involved have their own brains and free will.

3) There is SO much movie magic you can do to get around a non-driver actress having to do a driving stunt at full speed. There are just fucking uncountable ways around this.
