They want to blame the decline of toy sales thanks to video games, the things that have been around for 40 years.

They made SO many bone headed corporate decisions, behind only Sears and Radio Shack for sheer idiocy.

They put in a policy of forcing the cashiers to ask everyone for their phone number. NOBODY LIKES THAT SHIT! People avoid places that badger them for personal info. Quick: name a retail outlet that asks for personal info and is still in business. Walmart and Target don't ask anyone for info, and upper management dumbfucks can't piece two and two together on why those guys put everyone out of business. I can't describe describe the sheer bliss I felt when I first stopped shopping at Gamestop and bought my games from Target: no long line being held up by nerds talking about Magic, no upselling, no fake shortage pre-order scams, no surly clerk commenting on my purchase choice, just a bored teenager ringing me up without a word and it was glorious.

That obsession with trying to transition over to Babies R Us.

Giving up the spectacle. Ever since I was 8, I wanted to go to Toys R Us for video games just out of the sheer spectacle of seeing those rows and rows of displays with the paper tickets and demo videos. Then they abandoned that and condensed all their games into a tiny glass booth by the front, to save shelf space. Motherfucker, massive shelf space is your ONE advantage over online and other stores. I can get tiny glass booths at Gamestop or any other store. Why would I come to Toys R Us for that?

Even at their peak everything was overpriced and overmerchandised and then you ended up wit, say, an entire aisle of Dune toys being sold below wholesale 4 months after the movie left theaters (I still have a sandworm from that sale!).

They were basically the Blockbuster Video of toy stores.

I've never seen an independent toy store with more variety than Toys R Us. The exact opposite was the case of independent video stores and Blockbuster.

Toys are often loss leaders in retail, so Target and Wal-Mart will sell them knowing that their customers will buy other things. The low profit margins for toys really hurts you when that's all you sell.

I remember it being the absolute shit in the 80s. But I was a total science geek and begged my parents for a telescope and microscope and was so happy when I got them (on separate Xmases).

I haven't been to one since I was ten. I'm shocked they are still around, what with all the hauntings.
