My uncle was present for the old style and the current style. Submariners maintained the older initiation for longer than other ships because they didn't have women until 2010, and a lot of the horseplay was just not possible given the tight quarters.

A lot of this stuff migrated to the Shriners after WW2. The Freemason Blue Lodges have never had a stomach for the really grotesque pranks though.
