The first time anyone tried to organize around a labor issue in America it was for breaks to chew food. Teenage girls working and living in a New England mill were concerned that, due to the 16 hour, 6 day work weeks, their colleagues were literally inhaling their lunches without chewing to maximize their free time during their half hour breaks.
