The thing about pedestrians I really don't like is when they just walk in front of cars without looking. MEET THE DRIVER'S EYES TO MAKE SURE S/HE SEES YOU.

I had a pretty close call myself, waiting to turn into a street and watching oncoming traffic for a break. Saw a break, slapped the car into gear and started letting up on the clutch and LO AND BEHOLD some guy is walking his little daughter in front of my car. Clutch back down, crisis averted.

Guy saw my signal flashing (I assume) and should have seen the back of my head looking at oncoming traffic and just walked right in front of my car trusting I guess that I could somehow see him.

Anyway that's my rant, I hope you liked it.

The responsibility to be careful rests of the person capable of doing the most damage[1]. The crosswalk (and every intersection is an unmarked crosswalk) is a place specifically for drivers to pay extra attention. If you can't handle the stress of not running people over, maybe you shouldn't drive.

Yeah that's why I checked again, just force of habit. But I could see someone checking, then waiting for a break in traffic, then peeling out without checking again and not expecting there to be a guy with a kid standing in front of their car. Seriously, this guy came out of nowhere, he was not in view 10 seconds earlier.

I always make sure the driver sees me before I get in front of a vehicle. I don't trust anyone to be responsible.

Mr Caron, that's a bit of an absolutist position. The responsibility is on everyone to try and navigate traffic successfully. No driver can look every direction at once and everyone gets distracted. We all got to cooperate and not put ourselves in dangerous positions, even when we're 'right'.

It's a deliberately-chosen absolutist position. Let's get rid of cars (and do all the hard work to reconfigure our lives and cities and industries to deal with that simple notion) and make our lives better.

I can't remember the last time I could see a driver's face clearly, much less make eye contact. On account of the fact that there's, you know, a one-way mirror reflecting the sky between you and them. I guess maybe if it was late at night and they turned their interior lights on and you shone a flashlight in your own face then yeah, you might be able to make eye contact. Every once in a while in the summer it'll be possible to make some kind of eye contact through an open window, but usually it's not an option.

Around here you're lucky if a driver doesn't drive straight into a crosswalk against the light while signaling for a turn they never make (which happened to me three times in one week at the same intersection last year, although usually it's more like once or twice a month).

Incorrect. The pedestrian ALWAYS has right of way. The driver failed to yield.

The driver failed to yield... And the lady pushed her kid in front of the car. The driver may have bad etiquette, but that lady is more nuts than me nutting in a jar of mixed nuts.

It's not bad etiquette, it's like running a red light.

Ontario Highway Traffic Act 1990, chapter H.8, s section 140 (4) - "No pedestrian or person in a wheelchair shall leave the curb or other place of safety at a pedestrian crossover and walk, run or move the wheelchair into the path of a vehicle or streetcar that is so close that it is impracticable for the driver of the vehicle or streetcar to yield the right of way."

As much as I want to side with the mom-- because I constantly see and encounter asshole drivers who pretend like pedestrians don't exist-- she darted in front of the car after it started moving and then tried to run into the path of it even as it swerved left to avoid them. I can't help but feel like she had an axe to grind.

On the other hand, the driver should have stayed and waited at the stop sign while she crossed.

They probably thought if they got out and moved the carriage the mother would chimp out on them while screaming that her baby was being abducted or something.

The human thing to do would be to wait right behind the carriage and stop the car to make sure no one else went through in case someone knocked it over.

Funny you should say that. I saw a couple pushing a stroller across the street last weekend and I thought about this video. When I looked into the stroller, it was full of hamburger buns.

I can see part of a stop sign at the far left of the video starting at 0:08 (it's mostly obscured by another sign). According to an article I read the intersection where this happened (Soudan and Forman) is an all-way stop.
