I always appreciated Mr. Manson's appearance on Phil Donahue

Yeah, that was the thing that made me realize there was a bit more to Manson than just some guy taking advantage of the fact that when Iggy Pop and Arthur Brown and Alice Cooper and Screaming Lord Sutch were doing the same stuff 30 years earlier it wasn't caught on film.

Although it seems like he's spent the last 15 years or so doing everything he can to change my mind back again.

Do not listen to his Marc Maron interview. I remember you told some antidote about their recording process. I can't remember the details, except it was really fucking funny and badass.

I remember reading an interview in some production magazine around 99 or 2000 with the producer of one of the albums that followed up Antichrist Superstar (the last one I really paid attention to). The good anecdotes I remember from that are, in no particular order:

-Rented some kind of Count Duckula style mansion in the country on top of a small mountain (or more likely a big, steep hill) to record in.

-Destroyed a pair of Neumann mics worth probably half a year of my income by sticking them outside in the middle of a thunderstorm to record it.

-Threw a bass guitar down the mountain before one session, just to see what it would sound like after being thrown down a mountain.

-Set up a bunch of vintage synthesizers in a room with sequencers and generative patches running, left them alone for 3 or 4 days until some of them started to malfuncton from overheating, and then recorded the sounds they were making.

-For one song, Manson put some daggers on the floor point up, balanced a microphone on their points, and then recorded his vocal in pushup over the daggers to make his performance MORE INTENSE.

It was a great read, right up there with the old Al Jourgensen interview where he talks about Ministry getting their first big advance, buying a Fairlight CMI (which would have been tens of thousands of 80s dollars) and celebrating its arrival by throwing a party where everyone got really high and spraypainted on it and then Gibby threw up on it.

To be fair, a few years later, in the first half of the 2000s, he sold that exact Fairlight on eBay and according to the buyer's forum posts it was beat up on the outside, but when he opened it up it was immaculately maintained inside. No mention of any fossilized Gibby puke under the keybed or anything.

A few years after the interview I mean, obviously it wasn't on eBay in the late 80s.

The dagger thing, that was it. I love that so much.

Old_Zircon - 2019-04-20

I could have sworn it was in one of these two interviews but I can't find the passage so maybe I've been full on Mandela'd here.

There's still some pretty good stuff in those, though.

Anyway, that first part about them renting a mansion was me misremembering them recording at the mansion he owned, before moving to a studio, so we can definitely date it to 1998 or 1999, sometime around the release of Mechanichal Animals. That's as much as I want to try digging up right now, I have to get to work.

A thoroughly dedicated performer. A thoughtful person. Five stars.

Old_Zircon - 2019-04-19

Also, if this video is to believed, his butthole smells a little but tastes fine.

Raggamuffin - 2019-04-19

14:43! Put a Jan Terri tag on this right now!

Old_Zircon - 2019-04-19

Oh shit I forgot to add that on, that made me so happy when she showed up! I'll fix it right now.

Raggamuffin - 2019-04-20

I wouldn't have been more surprised if Chris Chan was somehow in this
