This has been a long struggle for Little Richard. In the early 80s, he appeared on Letterman, and talked about Jesus like he was on the PTL Club. Letterman and his audience seemed taken aback by that. It wasn't the Little Richard they'd been expecting. A clip of him back in the old days, meant to show how lost he had been as a sinner, got the biggest round of applause. His demeanor was sober and "straight". The audience got restless, Letterman was sardonic, bordering on hostile.

Little Richard ended by singing a hymn, "One Day at a tIme", which was actually a cover of hit by a white female country singer. It was a slow number. He sang it very straight, very sincere. It wasn't a bad song, He wasn't doing a bad job.

And, then, right at the very end, he raised his arm and gave out with that high-pitched soaring "WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" that had left me seriously wondering if the whole thing had been a joke.

There were lots of videos to choose from, but I suppose this one was the most concise.

I know that Little Richard has spent his entire life trying to reconcile his faith, his music, and his sexuality. It seemed that he had come to terms with himself, and it makes me sad that he now seems to feel he needs to backpedal in order to please god and go to heaven. He had the opportunity to be one kind of good example, and in rejecting that and trying to be a different kind of 'good' example, I feel he dropped the ball.

Hey, everybody drops a ball or two. This is who he's always been, and he's done all right, considering.that he's a gay black man born in the south in the 1930s. At this point, if youre not a sexual predator, I'll cut you some.slack.
