I've always wondered... what do USians mean when they say Capitalism? They say it a lot. I could just look up the dictionary definition or entry on wikipedia, but in the context ye say it, I can only interpret it as not really having any meaning in particular.. Like ye dont seem to be referring to any *particular* ideology or practice.. It seems to just be, the absence of one, ie. Let base human beheviour take its course without intervening in any way, or even aiming for any particular outcome. So eg, just let corps do anything they want, let wealth be accumulated at a geometric rate to infinity... Just fucking... whatever.. It seems to be no different to endorsing total anarchy or despotism (what total anarchy promptly collapses to) .

jangbones - 2020-02-05

like all terms used in political reference, it has an awful lot of meaning attributed only by the speaker or author, and specifics are almost useless to quantify

to about half of Americans capitalism is a magical economic system that guarantees free speech and liberty or some bullshit

SolRo - 2020-02-05

Murcan capitalism means doing everything opposite of socialism/communism, even if those systems do some things well. we must do the opposite lest rich people stop being quite so rich! Keep the billionaires in your prayers.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2020-02-05

I suppose since after the war it might just have meant 'enemy of the USSR'

SolRo - 2020-02-05

Also what jang said. If we make internet service state-run then there will be no more elections and the constitution will spontaneously combust

Wikipedia definition is preyyu accurate, not going to bother reposting it.

Old_Zircon - 2020-02-05

*pretty

jangbones - 2020-02-05

every single economic system in history has had a market, with the small exception of a Russian war economy system for less than a year

the most restrictive, state controlled communist economies have markets, with some level of freedom

USians

This was all funded by George Solros.

Two Jar Slave - 2020-02-05

Internet sophisticates and humanities majors use 'capitalism' as a synonym for 'greed' because it has 5x the syllables.

Pro tip: Using 'capitalism' as a cussword also infers a sort of Wally Brando-esque spirit of freethinking rebellion.

My dharma is the Nordic Model. Your dharma...?

William Burns - 2020-02-05

The the US liberalism and capitalism have somehow become antonyms. All political-adjacent language has lost all of its meaning and its impossible to have a rational conversation with anyone about anything.

Nominal - 2020-02-06

Two Jar is the guy who thinks Trump fans are swell people who just want to have a good time.

Two Jar Slave - 2020-02-06

Let me get this straight. You read through my comment history as far back as February 2016, and the most damning quote you could find was this:

"I've only watched 3 minutes of this, but... I kinda like these people! I mean I think they've been duped, and I don't agree with their candidate, but I guess they seem like a good time? ... Or maybe I'm just sympathetic to them because I get an exploitive jerkass vibe from the guy behind the camera."

Nom, I'm ruined. What a shocking expose.

Hazelnut - 2020-02-06

Nominal's going a bit off the deep end lately, I hope it's just temporary. He's forgetting that you can hold a political difference with someone without that other person being a monster, without them even being your enemy.

Failing to see that, he's jumping on typos and expressions of sympothy as if that means you're fraternizing with the enemy.

It's sad, and I hope he grows out of it.

Nominal - 2020-02-06

And Hazelnut is the stupidest bootlicker in this site's history who needs to shut the fuck up until he ponies up $1 billion for charity.

Hazelnut - 2020-02-06

Guess how I can tell that Nominal has never donated an hour of hos time or a dollar from his pocket.

Hazelnut - 2020-02-06

Oops, I wrote ‘hos’ instead of ‘his’. OH NO!

Two Jar Slave - 2020-02-06

Hazel is consistently one of the most articulate and reasonable people on this site. Nom, pull it together.

Nominal - 2020-02-07

Link your 501(c)(3) charity donation receipt for $1 billion or shut the fuck up and let billionaires speak for you.

Hazelnut - 2020-02-08

@TwoJar - thank you! I really appreciate it.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2020-02-08

Let me take a stab at it: capitalism is economic and political power in the hands of investors, instead of workers, customers, or government. We have the American health care system as it is because it's designed to make money for investors, not to care for the sick.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2020-02-09

>>>The the US liberalism and capitalism have somehow become antonyms. All political-adjacent language has lost all of its meaning and its impossible to have a rational conversation with anyone about anything.

Words I never thought I'd use: William Burns is right.

And this was meant to be a reply... Man I am already making a dogs dinner of this page.

SolRo - 2020-02-05

The free market of no moderation posting at work

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2020-02-05

That cracked me up!

Binro the Heretic - 2020-02-06

We hit the tipping point a long time back.

This is that scary moment when we realize the chair is tilted too far back and we're not going to catch ourselves.

SolRo - 2023-01-11

That’s not the scary moment.

The scary moment is when you hit the ground; do you crack your skull open and the rich oligarchs take over or does your skull absorb the impact and through a lot of pain and maybe a little blood you learn a valuable lesson about not tilting the chair too far.
